Over in Australia it was popular to come across places that gave discounts for the those on the dole such as cinema, museum entrance, barbers, and other services. Would it work in Ireland?

It was popular back in the 80's. I remember there were offers like cheap haircuts on a certain day of the week for the unemployed. I don't know if its still done.

I think it would be a good idea, along with higher tax rates for those with a college education and an ounce of ambition.

It was all about the butter vouchers back in the 80's. Butter vouchers and contaminated meat. It was a great time to be poor.

If you have low cost hours between 9 to 12, and 3 to 6 weekdays the unwashed unwaged can avail of it.

Bring back happy hour during the day!

How would you prove that you were unwaged? I'd just pay the lower fee in everywhere tbh.

Tbh I think everyone that works should have to give all of their money to the people that dont work. That way the unemployed will have money to spend on themselves. If you work then you're royally fucked...but that is no change to the current situation anyway

You could counteract that by allowing the rich to rob from the poor in a reverse robin hood. That should bring balance.

That happens in Germany since as long as I can remember.
Now we're not talking about buying a loaf of bread or something from a private shop but a lot of things provided by the state entirely or where the state is involved have several price tags on them. Like the 'normal' price, the 'unemployed' price and a lot of the time also a 'student' or 'pensioner' price. That would be for things like bus & rail, the ice rink, the public pool, museums, stuff like that. Some private enterprises have similar differentiations for instance the Bundesliga clubs would have unemployed or kids tickets to watch the games, cinemas might have, amusement parks might have...

    Oh, I almost forgot (edit).
And yes, since we're talking about Germany you gotta have proof you're unemployed or a student or a pensioner. So you sign on you're issued a Arbeitslosenausweiss, you're being matriculated you're issued a Studentenausweiss, you retire you're gettin' a Rentnerausweiss. I think for being a kid they still just look at you.... :-)

Because the boards servers would collapse under the amount of threads started to lambaste any unemployed people who paid less than real people to go to the pictures instead of working in salt-mines and the like.

I think people on the dole are getting enough for nothing.

You get about €100 euro a week in Australia compared to €200 euro a week here.

GTFO, I really wish personal abuse was allowed for posts like this...

Now that's something I would be all for. If it included reduced ESB and GAS, Keep the beer and cigs up though, bring down the price of food and all that. Maybe remove tax for unemployed? Then have social welfare down to 130 - 150. Would still be very little to live off :)

Went to the cinema lastnight, was nearly 40 quid, lucky the girlfriend has a job and doesn't mind taking me out every few months :)

Yes but the cost of living is about 1/2 the price.

That is true. I didn't mean it to sound like "you get enough, shut up".

If I was on the dole I would want everything going so, yeah I think it should happen more often.

I got a massive steak and beer in Australia for €20 compared to €40 here. The cost of living was a lot cheaper in Australia then it was here when I was over there. Food was better too :D

EDIT: Sorry didn't see other post after that

I'm a massage therapist in S. Dublin, and I don't have a problem giving student discounts (if they ask!).
I also work with a few clubs where I offer discounts. It's easy to police as they usually tell me when booking that they're on so-&-so team.
So, I would probably offer a similar discount during the quite times to the unemployed. Not sure how I could check if someone was really on the dole. Do people still get 'dole cards'?

I really doubt people will leave their jobs just to get cheaper cinema tickets, swims, etc.

I think people losing their jobs and being on the dole is bloody horrible, poor poor people, my friend lost his job today - he was an airplane mechanic - not a alot of nixers going!

Anyway, yeh there are things that would make like easier for him and others like cheaper food or whatever but leisure activities? really? it's not really fair is it? and what about the long term unemployed scum? do they not bloody well get enough as it is??

although the places which would offer the discount would never admit it, it would be the employed folk who who suffer, as their prices would have to go up to balance out the new discounts.

I think they should have a commuinty centre where unemployed people can get a hot dinner for cost price lets say 5 euro.

There's a church center in Dublin (Church St. D1) where you can get free lunches. Apparently, it's been getting busier and busier over the last 12- 18 months.

soooo, say my man showed up in his suit - would he get a free dins?

Apparently you get fed for free in the mosque in clonskeagh

Yes he would - They don't turn anybody away, ask any questions or try to sell you Jesus.
It was set up a few years ago to offer the homeless a hot meal. But, over the last year or so low paid workers and families started using the place.

If there's a Sikh Temple near you, you'll get a free meal there too, if you fancy an authentic curry night. :D (Not being racist)
