Road ban for tractor traffic jam farmer

AN "ARROGANT" farmer who held up a convoy of 20 cars as he drove his tractor home from a cattle mart has been banned for driving for one year.

In what could be an historic prosecution, the farmer, who was called "arrogant and individualistic" by a District Court judge, was told: "You don't have the right to force other people to drive at 15 miles per hour."

Michael Nevin (51) from Glenhest, Newport, Co Mayo, insisted that he had pulled over to allow traffic to overtake at the earliest opportunity when returning home from a mart on July 19 last, but gardai pursuing him said that he had passed six possible places before finally pulling in.

    Full Story

Didn't see this posted. I've no sympathy for him at all, I've been held up by the likes fo him too many times. Thoughts

Hey (Hay??) - he pays his taxes and his petrol and his insuracne and he has every right to use the road as the rest of you and he probably lives two miles from where he has to work and it might have been rainging and ****ing busses are like coffin ships and all the other pathetic excuses drivers use!

    Still happy he got done.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The distance just proves my point: drivers don't give a **** about other drivers.

They should have put him out of business ...what good is a road ban?

He's a traffic jam farmer, farming the bloody traffic jams and then lets them run amok on the M50

Been held up many a time by inconsiderate farmers like this guy. Not before time the cops start prosecuting them.

A bit harsh really. A bit harsh indeed... He should appeal it. If he pulled in to let traffic pass then what's the big deal?

It's a pity he got banned, and I hope this does not mean other tractor-drivers will bite the bullet. I find the tractors an extremely useful secret weapon in my pursuit of scum. One day I was chasing a scumbag in my car. The scumbag was getting away from me but he didn't account for the tractor around the corner. The tractor caused a huge traffic jam which allowed me to catch the scumbag, let the fists fly and bring him to justice.

to be fair, he might not own the roads, but the Nevins DO own Newport :pac:

He says he pulled in but in fact, he pulled in because the blue lights were on behind him. This county is full of ignorant farmers who think their business is more important than everybody else and see no harm in driving at rediculous speeds. Glad he was put off the road tbh. Hope it'll teach others.

This was discussed in detail on the motors forum yesterday. The conclusions we unanimously came to were:

1- It would have been alright as long as he didnt drive in the overtaking lane
2- You can pull into the hard shoulder but not drive on it
3- Nobody knows how to use a roundabout in this country
4- Nissan Micras are all driven by grannies and should be banned from the road
5- At least he didnt use front fog lights
6- He should have his lights on when driving during daylight hours
7- Driving too slow is more dangerous than driving too fast
8- VRT is unjustifiable and should be abolished.

We have all been delayed on the roads - you get mad, you get home and you forget about it. The judge, in my opinion, wanted to get this type of case noticed and for people who intentionally delay traffic to get the message. I've no doubt he will get his licence back on appeal and to be honest he shouldn't have lost it in the first place. He had no previous convictions. A hefty fine and a good ticking off would have been more appropriate.

He should also have to pay for the delay to those behind him out of his many, many government subsidies.

The tractor should not have to pull in every time he reaches a gate way, if this was the case he would never get home. IF only people were more patient in this country. It wasn't like he was preventing people from passing him, I think the judge is a joke. It wasn't a fair decision, it will escalate to the next court and will be dismissed...

The Balla to Castlebar road is really busy and there would be few oppurtunities to overtake on it from about 8.30 until 18.30 most days. Saturdays are a real disaster with the amount of tractors. There is no hard shoulder on the road either, so he couldnt have driven in one. On the other hand, he could have pulled in just after the railway crossing at Manulla, on the castlebar side by the bridge, at vivo (is it still vivo?) in Breaffy or at the football pitch-all of these have loads of room.

Is the driver of the first car of a two mile tailback equally as guilty even if he's driving at the speed limit ? What if the farmer was driving at 50kmh would that have made a difference.

if it's at the mak speed limit, the second car might be guilty of tailgating.

A lot of times, the second car in a tailback is guilty of bad driving when they refuse to overtake the slow front car when safe to do so. The other cars then have to try and overtake two front cars instead of one.

No, the country is full of farmers who think their business is as important as everybody else's, and don't see why they have to stay off the roads or pull in every 100 yards simply because they're driving farm machinery. :)

    Lessee ...

    - lorries
    - buses
    - construction heavy machinery (or at least that part of it still in use)
    - hearses

Hmmm, may be more, but that's a good start.

NOW the roads are clear for the SUVs and the Porches and the Clios! \o/

Though ... actually ... given a lack of any economic activity at all, there probably aren't too many cars left (not to mention a lot of random dead bodies scattered around).

Still, I'm sure the Ministers and TDs appreciate having the roads to themselves.

Who said Soviet Russia could never be reborn? :pac:

I think you would find that farmers would get a lot less done if they had to pull in every 100 yards for traffic. They have jobs that need doing. The guards in this case were just too hasty.

May as well ban all cyclist's and people walking or running as well. They slow things down as well. How about the weather as well while we are at it that snow the last week was just terrible hod to slow right down there. Ya snow should be banned too.

    Well now let's see.
Lorries and Buses, they travel more or less at the speed limit unless they're on a motorway. In which case there's plenty of room to overtake.

    Construction Machinery?
Not a common thing at all.
    same goes for hearses.

Also there's 'driving too slow for the conditions' and 'driving too slow for the conditions and being inconsiderate of everyone else around you'.
Tractor drivers tend to be the latter. (Yes that's a generalisation, go wild with it! )

This wasnt in newport thats the problem. He was actually holding up traffic on a national secondary road the N60 from claremorris to castlebar. I have driven this road on several occasions and know that it can be very busy with traffic. Fair enough if it was the regional road after castlebar but I think he was rightly banned for this.

Also there is adequate space for any driver to pull in this road .The N59 galway to westport road is another example as I usually had to overtake 3 tractors in a row when I was commuting along there last year. Another thing I would like to see the gardai doing is enforcing a law to artic trucks not driving on country roads and to keep to main roads if possible.

Do farmers have to buy road tax for tractors ?
If not then he shouldn't be using the roads apart from where it crosses his land and he needs to get from one field to another.

Also there's no road worthiness test like a NCT for agricultural machinery!

Am i right in thinking that once you're 16 you can drive a tractor without a licence too ?
