The brakes on my mark V Golf GTI are starting to squeek / whine. Is this a sign new brakes are required. I've owned the car since the start - Feb 08 and I have 35000 KM on on the clock after a year. It would seem a bit soon to have to get new brakes? I cant be sure which side is starting to squeek, or if it is front or back. I'd be a bit pi$$ed off if I need a new set of brakes.

No brake lining warning light has come on.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Muppet Man

    Sometimes its caused by dust.

If you lock your wheel to the right and hop out, look in at the brakes and you'll be able to see how much you've got left on the front pads

If you drive it fairly hard you are probaly getting close to needing a new set of front pads but the squeeking doesnt mean they are worn. Its generally caused by a high frequency vibration. This vibration can be cured by putting a little smear of copper grease on the back of the pad. this deadens as vibrations. Some original equipment pads come with an anti squeel coating but it will wear away over time.
If you have half the wear still remaining on the pads, it would be worth, taking them off and getting the copper grease on them but if nearly worn, probably best to use for a little while and then stick new pads on the front.

There is a metal pin in the pads that gives off the metal to metal sound to warn you to change them before they wear completely. The warning light only comes on when the brake oil level drops. Sometimes the oil level drops as the pads wear.

This car would have a pad warning light triggered by an electrical circuit buried slightly into the pad wear material. When the wire starts to rub on the disc, light shows.

I have a Ford Focus that has this sound as well. I think the breaks need replacing - anyone know roughly how much this will cost?

    Thanks in advance :)

Thanks to all who responded... I'll take a look at the pads later today in the dalylight and try to gauge how low they are going.

    Cheers
