thought I had asked this before, must have dreamt I did....

Is it a big job to remove tiles? All the DIY books I consulted say 'paint over them'. But I've seen this done and it just looks awful. Is it really such a big job that the DIY books don't recommend doing it? Will I have to employ a tiler?

I depends where the old tiles are. If they are on the floor or wall. If you tile over the floor tiles the floor will go up (doors, toilet bowl...). Not everything is so easy...:(

First off you want a good adhesive.
I put ceramics over vinyl tiles recently and they just popped up. I was using a cheap adhesive (Not my choice. The guy I was doing the job for bought it, I warned him, but he didn't listen). It was B&Q adhesive.
I'd recommend any Evo stik technik adhesive for floor or walls. Actually I'd recommend that even if you aren't tiling over tiles. That or any Botament product. A bit more expensive, but worth it in the long run.
You're probqably also better off using a cement based adhesive if it's a wall tile. The pre-mixed stuff might not be strong enough. It would be fine on a small ceramic, but won't cut it with porcelain, marble, terracotta or slate, or a larger ceramic.

If you do decide to take the tiles up, I can tell you now that one of two things will happen.
    1. Floor tiles: They will either come up in your hands or you will be down on your hands and knees with a hammer and chisel.
    2. Wall tiles: You will either be left with lots of adhesive on the walls (not really a problem) or the plasterboard will come away with the tiles, which means re-slabbing the walls.

A lot of tilers won't do this for you. They'll tell you to do it yourself and get back to them when the job is ready. Mind you, there's not too much work out there at the moment, so you'll probably get someone to do it if you want to go that route.

If you decide to remove the tiles yourself, then you really need to wear good gloves and eye protection. Otherwise you'll end up with your fingers cut to shreds and bits of tile in your eyes.

Edit: For the love of god, do not paint over tiles or buy any of that grout whitener stuff. Both are complete rip-offs.
