THE ORGANISERS of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Galway have rejected suggestions that the event could be relocated to Cork.

Let’s Do It Galway chairman John Killeen told Galway City Council this week that he was aware of such rumours in circulation. The stopover – the first round-the-world race to berth in an Irish port – would take place as planned in Galway from May 23rd to June 6th, he told councillors in a presentation to the local authority members.

The stopover is estimated to be worth in excess of €40 million to Galway’s economy, although there has been a drop in anticipated corporate sponsorship.

Up to 350,000 visitors may be attracted to the event, which is being supported by the Government.

Surely we could get all those nice racing boats lined up in the Liffey or in Dun Laoghaire when the HSS is sold to Venezuela ;)

Come on Galway, get the finger out, you have competition!

It ain't the 1st round the world race to stop in Ireland either. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race stopped in Crosshaven last summer and will stop there again in Summer 2010. Cork are also gonna sponsor a boat in the race. Check it out http://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/

I did 2 legs on the last race, from Western Australia - Qingdao - California. Great fun.

Sorry for going off topic, was that the old British steel race, where all the boats were made of steel?

No, I think you're thinking of the BT Global Challange Race, they went out of business a few years ago and are no longer racing. Clipper is still going strong though. Both organistations had the same idea, amateur sailors sailing around the world, but I guess the BT Challange Race had a bad accountant or something. :)
