Terry Dixon. Now a Hammer

In 2006 the name Terry Dixon shot to prominance, when the former Spurs man was called into the Irish Senior Squad for a friendly international against Chile. What was most interesting was his 16 years of life experience, and no more.

He never appeared on the pitch, never returned to the setup, and he endured a nightmare injury, while almost see him leave the game. However, he is back, and has been handed the number 37 shirt at West Ham United.

Thats great :) But I could have sworn his retirement was the be all and end all, that the medics advised that, being the age he is, his bones were still developing and that to take up football again could seriously **** him up permanently if he took another bad knock, no?

Maybe he watched Rocky II and decided that like Rock he knew better than the doctors :D

    its on the WHUFC site.

I've seen him play underage and reserve for spurs and was usually the best player on the pitch, still a real prospect.

    Zola:

"Everybody keeps talking about Terry Dixon but I have not seen him play yet. Hopefully soon he will be training with me so I will try to have an idea about him as a footballer.

"I'm looking forward to seeing him. They told me he was quite a talent and I'm really curious. This is a good opportunity for him. I think this club has been very good to him and I want to see how he takes the opportunity.

"A big satisfaction would be to see this guy have some success because he was ruled out from the game. They said he couldn't make it so if he does I will be very happy for him because he has been through hell. If he manages to be a successful player it will be good for him and for us as well."

    Dixon suffers setback

    March 20, 2009

West Ham striker Terry Dixon has suffered a setback in his bid to make the breakthrough at Upton Park as the Irish youngster has been sidelined once again through injury.

Dixon was forced to leave Spurs after a nightmare time through injury and it was hoped that he could resurrect his career with the hammers this season.

Having made strides at the club, Dixon was poised to be handed a place in the first team squad this weekend, but a niggling calf injury has denied him of that.

Hammers manager Gianfranco Zola said: “The problem with Terry Dixon is now he has sorted out his problems with his knee, every time he tries to force something he has a tight calf or groin because he has been out for such a long time. We have been following him for a long time. He may have had the chance to play by now if he was fit.

Calf and groin strains are to be expected and an easy fix...hopefully he has a good pre-season and comes back firing

they're fairly common if you've been out for a long time with an injury, Rosicky seems to celebrate recovering from one strain by picking up another one

As he gets more and more game time (at any level) he'll stop picking them up

Great story this. A strain won't halt the progress of this clearly determined and talented lad. I'd also be fairly certain that West Ham have every faith Dixon's knee problems are behind him. If they had any idea that he wouldn't be able for the rigours of professional football, they would have given him a shorter contract. 3 years suggests plenty confidence.
Where's he from, by the way? He's been playing with Spurs since the age of 9. Is he English born? Excellent for us he picked us, given he'd surely be up to standard for England.

Another heart-warming story is Chris Fagan's. Spoke to a scout at the Kennedy cup once and he reckoned Fagan was the most talented lad to go to England from Ireland. He was released from United at the end of last season, in spite of starting life there brightly for the under 18 side. Couldn't get a deal elsewhere so he headed to the Glenn Hoddle academy in Spain and now has an Irish under 21 cap and scored a hat-trick for Huddersfield reserves in a trial match. Hope he can return to English football, like Dixon, and be a success.

Yeah, he's from London. His dad's English and his mum is Irish. Like any good Irish lad, he knew better than to argue with his mammy and he declared for Ireland very early on.

Some good news for west ham and ireland

While his West Ham United team-mates have either been representing their respective countries or sunning themselves on faraway beaches, Terry Dixon is working hard at Chadwell Heath.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international joined the Hammers on a three-year contract in February after battling back from a long-term knee injury.

Dixon, who has spent endless hours in the gym at the club's training ground in a bid to regain full fitness, recently travelled to Belgium with physiotherapist Stijn Vandenbroucke to continue his rehabilitation under the watchful eye of renowned knee specialist Dr Marc Martens.

Martens, who has worked with AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso and Kakha Kaladze in Antwerp, examined Dixon before giving him the all-clear to step-up his fitness work. Now, the 19-year-old is back at Chadwell Heath and working hard with Vandenbroucke and other members of the club's medical department.

"It's just a case of getting fit for pre-season, which is why I'm in early," explained Dixon. "Hopefully, come next month I'll be ready because I haven't played football in ages and I just want to start playing again. Whenever I train I feel normal so I just need to work on my fitness now.

"Stijn from West Ham came with me to Belgium. He is from Belgium so I underwent some procedures with Dr Martens and then I did a week of rehab with Stijn. I then went on holiday to Bulgaria but I had a fitness programme to follow while I was over there.

"Touch wood, I'm physically right now and I'm back in to work on getting my muscles physically strong and then I'll start running when the boys come back in. I will be ready for the start of the new season."

Having been out of action for an extended period of time, Dixon is well used to working without the company of his team-mates. Since returning to the training ground the teenager has had only Hammer of the Year Scott Parker, who is recovering from a groin problem, for company.

"I would rather be here than on holiday to be honest, just to get ready for the new season," he added. "Scott Parker has been in this week, but other than that I haven't seen any of the other players since the end of the season."

Going to be hard. Fair play to him though. Sounds like the will of the man isn't in question.

    He's in good company anyways,

"..Although he made good progress during the last two weeks, Valon Behrami will stay behind to work on his individual fitness programme along with Dean Ashton and Terry Dixon.."

Looking forward to seeing him banging goals in this season....Gwan Dixie :D

I'm not a Hammer btw, we need more exciting options up front from an Irish viewpoint

According to our friends at Fantasy Premier League the Hammers only have first team two strikers at the moment, Cole and Ashton (who is supposedly being sold). Wonder what are the chances of seeing young Dixon being added to that list by the end of the season? Best of luck to him in journey back.

There's talk of Ashton being sold? Since when? And who's interested in buying him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭madds

    Sunday Express -
Dean Ashton’s two-year misery at West Ham is set to end with a £5million move to either Stoke, Fulham or Hull.

    Daily Star -
Stoke expect to seal a £5million move for Dean Ashton early this week.

If this is in any way true, it would be a very good signing for Stoke if they can keep him injury free.

Check out the Transfer Centre section at sportinglife.com. That's where I learnt of it. Suppose we'll see if it has legs over the next few days.

whufc.com has an exclusive picture gallery from the friendly game with Valenciennes.

Gianfranco Zola named a strong starting XI including the returning Jack Collison and Danny Gabbidon, while Terry Dixon got his first taste of the Boleyn Ground pitch.

Hope he can do well for the hammers, they seem to bring in an endless talent of youg players through there underage system hope Terry can get the same chance.

Apologies for bumping an old thread but thought I'd post here instead of starting a new one. Unfortunately, Terry's been released from his contract at West Ham by mutual consent. His injury must never have fully healed. I had high hopes for him when he joined.
