Rear Hub Noise

    Hi Guys

Been reading a lot of the useful advice given out here by some very knowledgeable people and really appreciate the amount of time you give to helping less experienced cyclists with problems.

Anyway, that's the compliments out of the way, I have a question about noise from the rear hub.

My bike has developed a slight knocking sound from the rear hub/bearings, which is present when the bike is cold (i.e. not used for some hours). After about 15-20 mins. of fast riding the noise is gone. My guess is that the grease around the bearings warms up and lubricates the area where the knocking is coming from. Hope I have explained properly and would welcome any advice. My bike's a Specialized Sirrus about 4 months old.

    Thanks

Right, that's the question fixed anyway! Now for the bike bit - seeing as it's only the 4 months old I'd suspect that the cones in the rear hub have become loose, if there's lateral play in the wheel that would confirm things. It's a bit too early in the bikes life for bearings etc to be worn. To address the loose cones you'll need a cone spanner to tighten them but if you're unfamiliar with bike maintenance you might be as well off poping into the LBS and let them do it, should take 2 minutes and be a cheap job if they're fair

Is there any noticable lateral play in the wheel? Best checked a few times between slight rotations.

No. Wheel rotates smoothly without any play.

LBS suggests bringing it back to where I bought it as it's under warranty still.
