I’m looking to lose a beer belly and have been running 2.5miles 3 times a week. (Will be increasing distances). I was told by someone in this forum that a simple calculation would be

Calories Used per day> Calories consumed per day = Some weight loss

I went and calculated my average calorie intake per day (around 2300)

I also calculated my average calorie usage per day (around 1700)

This included work, sleep, driving to work, relaxing time and the Running (Which amazingly only accounts for 270 Calories!).

This still leaves me with 600 calories per day in the red.

My question is do I have to cut more food and run greater distances to lose weight or to you need the likes of the extra calories for survival or what?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :D

It take a while to work your way through but might be worth it to check your figures are correct. After reading it, come back and tell us where you feel your biggest problem is: e.g. eating at wrong times, eating too much refined food, etc

Couldn't imagine that being correct to be honest. As hunnymonster said, it would be worth checking your figures. If you were to be of average weight and leading an almost completly sedentary lifestyle you should burn more than that per day. I burn about 2800 calories per day with moderate gym exercise.

Your RMR is closer to 2000 kcal, just slightly over.

Still overeating 300kcal a day which adds up though!

I use the diet and exercise tracking on www.trainingpeaks.com to keep track of my ins and outs. Pretty good for CHO:PRO:FAT as well.

Perhaps you could run the loop twice to make up a 5mile circuit. Try doing it on one of your sessions for a week or two (so like in a week, one session is 5miles and two sessions are 2.5miles). Then increase it to two sessions of 5miles and one session of 2.5miles. Build up the distance a little bit at a time. Try and get to three 5 mile runs a week.
Its great you're doing 3 trainings a week. Try and increase them a little for a few weeks and in time if you want more calories burnt from your trainings buy a running book, or surf the net. Alot of 'training for a marathon for dummies' kind of books would help you get more out of your running.
So far as food i'm only getting into it myself and i've being running for years. So i'll skip commenting on that.
