Deciding to leave medicine. Hate it. Don't know where to look for info/advice on other careers. Returning to college not an option as have family commitments. Anyone have any ideas where to look?

    Are you qualified or undergraduate?

I too felt like leaving at one stage, but glad I stuck with it- Have you thought about emigrating? Best thing I ever did.

If you don't like the day to day nonsense of clinical medicine you could try one of the lab specialties, like microbiology or pathology?

You could do a PhD in a clinical science, if you're more suited to lab work.

Or , despite what the above clueless poster says, you could follow me into public health. Most of the biggest medical advances in the last 100 years have had significant public health input. You can do the day to say stuff of tracking the various outbreaks of meningitis etc.

I'm specialising in HIV epidemiology, and am hoping to enter the murky world of international health, where public health is ikely to have much more to offer than clinical medicine.

The world's your oyster, dude. It's pretty unlikely that you won't find a corner of medicine that you could go into if you have any interest in the subject left at all.

    Good luck though.

Im currently working my ass off for medicine atm and to think that somebody would get it instead of me only for them to drop out is quite annoying :(

You should really consider your options before dropping out of it... you've been given an opportunity that hundreds wish for. Be careful in ur choices because you might regret it forever if you do drop out :/

I used to think the same thing at your stage, but as a doctor myself I fully understand what the OP is going through.
I don't think anyone can really judge someone in the OP's position who has not been through it themselves.

What an idiotic thing to say. The OP said he hates his work but he should stay in it because he got an 'opportunity hundreds wish for'... great reasoning indeed.

At this stage in his career I doubt he cares what some student thinks. No offence.
Rather than getting angry maybe you should open your mind to the possible reasons he's quitting and think long and hard about why you want to do medicine. Better than ending up in his position in a few years me thinks.

I understand your point, really I do, I'm just finishing a degree in microbiology and I hope to do medicine. But would you be anymore content if the OP went on to be a doctor but was doing without anything but 100% commitment? Ultimately the OP got into this position because he/she worked hard and deserved to get that opportunity. Unfortunately we don't always know what it is we want from life from the word go.

OP, like many have said there's an aspect of medicine you'll find you're niche if you have a look around, it doesn't have to be hospital/GP. I've worked with a few docs in some shape or form who've all done radically different thing with their lives be it academic medicine/research, government, industry etc. Have a think but ultimately do what you feel is right.

Before anyone can really answer your question we would need to know:
    1. what stage are you at ie student/doctor
    2. what do you hate about it
    3. what would you like to do if there were no obstacles in your way

Post again in a few years after you qualify.
Even then what you're saying would be presumptuous tbh.

Fair enough yeah, I just kinda flipped out a lil bit haha

but yeah maybe reasearch could be an avenue for the op,
obviously he chose medicine caus hes interested in science etc so i think he should consider drug research or something if he was interested in that, plenty of opportunities aswell in ireland for pharmceutical work etc

depends on what your interests are/lie

Business --- Pharmaceutical manager-have training programs, always trying to recruit medics as they need them for licence (got a call recently about same, pm if you want details)

Education --could do masters medical education and move into medical lecturing

writing --books advisory leaflets etc, PR companies need people tow rite this stuff on their behalves

Non clinical medicine --other have mentioned laboratory stuff, there is also pubic health, foreign medical aid, medecins sans frontiers etc

lots of options in the medical field for non traditional "doctors", doctor to a sporting club in UK.
