    Okay.....deep breath......

Tried to install Canon software CD.
Came up with admin box - but no admin name in the box. Won't accept my admin name and password.
Boot off System disk, run permissions repair, and it seemed to have to repair everything.
Ran Disk repair, all ok, ran fsck just for the sake of it, reboot - same again.
Now, when I go into accounts, it has my name down as a standard user. Looked up Apple support and it says boot off disk and reset Root user, then reset my account back to Admin. I can't. There is no HD there to allow me to change root user on.
Can't do it through utilities as I can't log in as admin....
Firefox bookmarks etc all gone, so something is corrupted big style.
Can't do a new user because - yes, you've guessed it, I can't log in as Admin.....Good thing I've no hair to tear out......

Can I do this through terminal - Setup root user? Has anyone any ideas what I can do here?

Crap, sounds like you're having a hell of a time.

    This might be of help.

ok rebel here's what to do.

Boot from system disk again, go to reset password, now rather than select yourself, use the pull-down menu to select the root user, reset the password to your desired password. Don't forget to repeat for yourself.

    Reboot

make sure you get the login/password window

    Type: root for user
    and the password you selected

Got to system prefs - select accounts, your name, then allow user (YOU) to administer computer. Log out of root, log in as yourself, install software.

    That should do it.

nialler, do you have to active the root account through Directory Services like you used to?

no - that's only if you don't want have the admin panel come up as a normal user when installing software.

    Edit: NEVER do that.

Problem was, there was no HD icon to select from only system disk, therefore I couldn't select root user. Ended up doing an archive and install, because I seemed to be in a loop and couldn't figure a way out.
    Thanks for the replies.
