I bought my breeding pheasants from Aidan Wogan in Slane recently.
Nice guy to deal with & the pheasants are all released & caught again wild caught birds so much better. Would recommend him.

I have used canvas bags for years & they work well.
This is how Aidan supplies small amounts.
4 birds max per bag. No probem mixing them. I have not used crates but that size allows them to jump around potentially damage themselves??

that crate sounds fine 1 foot high would do make sure there is plenty off holes in it for air once the birds ar kept in dark they will stay calm ahd wont jump around. the ones i get from england come in crates 4.5f 3f by 1f high they put 10 adult birds in each crate

    Hi WILDFOWLER,

Are you finding a significant saving/quality by getting them in from England?

    hi
the uncle has a shoot there he catchs up as many birds as he can after the season he keeps the hens and i get the cocks for a £1 EACH and pay vet certs. only taikin 2 to3 hundred. i release 50 around our club and sell the rest to clubs around me. I dont think its good to release too many cock birds at this time off year unless u have enough hens for the cocks. if there isnt enough hens they will wonder or kill each other fighting.

    Hi wildfowler,

Sounds like a great deal from the uncle. Another problem with an excess of cock birds is that they will consistantly drive the hens from their nests trying to breed with them and your wild clutches are therefore reduced also. Its fine releasing a few adult birds to supplement your shooting but if you release too many, as you say "if there isnt enough hens they will wonder or kill each other fighting" and you are going to loose a proportion to predators also. We have reared from 6 week olds for many years, and even though it involves alot more work, there has been a bigger return on the numbers released. I guess alot depends on how many members are willing to help out in pen feeding, catching up and releasing, topping up spiral feeders etc. Drumconrath have won the club of the year for the past 3 years and one of them told me that they can rely an 40 out of their 60 members to do work in the club....

i agree poults ar the way to go as u say tho it is a lot of hard work. there is about 30 in our club but only about 5 of us do anything and the rest give out if there is no birds there but still do nothing. hope to release 600 poults this year 70% cock 30% hens. what breed of pheasant do u think is the best.

We have tried numerous crosses down through the years...some good but some impossible to hold within the club. Our supplier convinced me last year to try the Blackneck cross. Even with the awfull weather throughout the summer, the return has been great. We will be sticking to them this year. Much hardier bird, a little smaller than the ringnecks but just as nice on the plate....

if u dont mind me asking who did u get them from

The guys name is Stewart (I cant think of the name of his game farm in Cork) and his mobile is 0872542062. He was charging €4.85 for cocks only last year (6 week old poults). We have been dealing with him for a number of years with no issues.
