Getting up and running in Sydney

Just wondering if anyone has any advice, workwise and accomodation wise, for someone landing in Sydney later this week. I had thought I was fleeing from the worst of the economic mess, but since Christmas when I booked my flight similar gloom seems to be engulfing Australia too.

With funds being relatively tight I had booked a WHV with the intention of getting an engineering job ASAP, but from what I can see I'm gonna have an awful lot of trouble securing something, with all the agencies who in the past had been crying out for engineers seeming to have gone awfully quiet.

I had been hoping to get into the renewable energy sector in one of the East coast citys, preferably Sydney, but am pretty worried now as regards employment. From what I hear quality of life in the cities is pretty special, so I'd like to get settled in one rather than going rural!

Apart from the usuals like Hays, would anyone have any advice as regards securing engineering consultancy work. I'd have a couple of years of civil design behind me, along with a recently completed masters in renewable energy. I've applied directly to a few companies but no joy. I don't think I'd have enough site experience for a contractor to take me on.

    thanks
