Sorry I'm going a bit loopy from all the books, and the light over my desk that couldn't be any more broken and blinks like lightening.

    Schols die please.

There are a limited number of computers in the Libraries so we ask users to restrict their use to academic work only. There are plenty of other computers college-wide where you can access facebook.

Great news, about time a move was made to cut down on wastage of resources. Any student caught on facebook, bebo or other junk on the internet within the library should be fined IMO

If you click on a link through your email you can circumvent the blocking program. Not that I would know personally or anything.

Schols will not die, it is changing though. I am very bored reading about open balls, closed balls, dense and complete balls. I am starting to think metric spaces are a bit ghey tbh.

Ah I dunno, I read boards in the library sometimes, it's not like I'm depriving anyone of a seat, and it's nice to take a break from your work now and again.

Get a laptop. Using your own laptop in the library doesn't deprive anyone else.

The people who don't turn off the sound on their laptop don't deprive you of anything but do deserve to be shot.

I do have a laptop, which I use to read boards... I didn't even know there WERE other computers in the library (aside from the catalogue ones)...

I don't see anything unreasonable about using your own laptop to go on boards. Using a library computer would be a bit rich to say the least. On a slightly unrelated matter, people in computer rooms abuse the facility big time. If I ever need a computer for academic purposes, the place would be full of dicks on bebo or whatever. Also, it really annoys me when people have full blown conversations in computer rooms. Sometimes you'd have 3 or 4 people standing around a computer watching a video on youtube and laughing their heads off. Meanwhile the person next to them is grinding their teeth in frustration. This convinced me that I needed a laptop. End of rant.

Typical nanny attitude that's prevalent in Dublin University 2009.

There's already a procedure to deal with abuse of internet facilities. Jumped-up administrators behaving like school teachers is quite frankly, pathetic.

This draconian action is an affront to the ethos of the university where people should have the freedom (and responsibility) of access to information.

People need to grow up and behave like university-going adults. The school child mentality is getting out of hand and actions such as blocking certain websites only reinforces this mentality.

Maybe it is indeed time to bring back fees. Students might actually be more demanding of facilities provided.

in the Hamilton, if you're facing the Short Lending from the windows, the computers on the left are catalogue ones, and on the right are internet access ones.
There's notices on all of the internet ones saying they are only for academic work.
The catalogue ones can only access the catalogue.

TBH I dont see too much wrong with people using the computer rooms for social networking, email or whatever. They are public access computer rooms, provided so everyone can have access to a computer.
Many people dont have laptops and are living in student accommodation and so dont have a 'family PC'..
There are plenty of computer rooms/huts around campus.
If you have a real problem with the availability of a computer, then I'd say get a laptop...

From what I gather, this is action being taken by the librarians, not ISS.

Where are they getting these new-found powers?

tools wasting time on library computers wrecks my head. anyone here in 05/06 will remember standing outside the computer rooms in a queue of seven while every single person in the room is on bebo.

personally, i think they should be blocked on college PCs but allowed on laptops.

So you're saying that rather then blocking the site there should be people walking around issuing fines to discourage people from miss use of the computers (which btw using them for social networking is). Thats seems insanely backwards and wasteful of resources.

These computers are provided by the Library rather then being general college computers, as such the Library administration are free to set policy.

So the Library are now free to decide what sites are "appropriate" and what sites aren't? Will they be banning Alex Jones sites next? Or certain Arabic news sites? Or what about any media that's not "mainstream"?

There's a higher level ethical aspect to this "ban" by the library staff that should be driven by College rules (i.e. let the Fellows and Scholars decide if it's appropriate for a university to be censoring information).

You agree to their terms of service. They provide the computers for an expressed purpose.

Wait till you finish college and enter industry, in the real world you just get fired for browsing sites you shouldn't be. Why should people have to wait for a computer while you look at pictures of your boyfriend posing in his new Gant jumper on his Facebook?

I'm sure if you can come up with a valid, academic reason for viewing Facebook then the adminstrators of whatever computer lab/room you are looking to use will be happy to grant you short term access. You are at university to study, entertainment is not provided by the university. Go be entertained on your own time, in your own space and without affecting anyone elses education.

*I have no affiliation to TCD, did not study there and have only been there to go drinking in The Pav after work on warm summer evenings!

The philosophical views of the Fellows and Scholars regarding the ethos of information use in a university supercedes any administrative rules or regulations AFAIC.

    University != private company.

BTW, you do realise it's against the law for you to drink in the Pav "after work" unless your name is signed in the black book behind the bar?

When you eventually leave the confines of TCD and rejoin the real world you'll probably find that your employer has much more stringent restrictions on web access. Why should computers assigned to research and studying be made available so you can play games / check what your friends had for breakfast? It's not an infringement on your human rights, it's just an attempt to get you to use the machines for their intended purpose.

ApeX banned me from boards during schols for my own good. I'm willing to extend this favour to any of you who want it.

    As for facebook/Cantab/Boston

I thought facebook was usually banned in the Berkley, and I don't see it as being a huge problem. Take yourself off to the laser huts where you're less likely to be preventing someone from accessing a journal, or proving to a librarian that the Athens code is missing for a journal.

Cantab, it really never grows old for you does it. I thought you column allowed you enough space to ramble about the greatness of Trinity in days past while the rest of the institution attempts to move forward.

No seriously ban away, I am wasting way too much time on here.
