Had to leave this thread up coz a few weeks ago i stuck the boot in asking where was the justification in all of her hype.
Hearing Jerry Kiernans comments on rte though that she is a great shout in the hepthatalon is bang on. Too early to mark her our as a world or even european beater but in a few years i can see us all cheering her on over a few days competition in major events.

btw....just on the pics...her muscle size is phenomenal. What she supplementing with?

Probably hard work and a well thought out and intergrated training programme. Her muscle size is not that extraordinary really, she is now just looking like an elite athlete and has lost the 'soft' look.

Didnt think she looked like a hulk or anything myself. I like her attitude to hope she really does well. Great to see someone with a smile most of the time compete.

And now she's rewarded with her first Senior International Championships, where she'll be mixing it with the best of Europe. Well deserved, and good forward thinking by the AAI.

I reckon if she did make it big she would be the darling of the media and a great face for the sport, very bubbly!!!

She's already an experienced multi-eventer having represented Ireland on numerious occasion in the international schools penathlon e.g. http://www.esaa.net/2004/schoolsinternationalpent.pdf and having won the English AAA Junior Pentathlon in 2006 - http://www.gbrathletics.com/bc/aaaij.htm

Not sure if Kiernan was acknowledging her talent in multi-events or suggesting she should give it a go when she's already a proven junior international at the event.

Really don't Proper exceeding in the multi-event myself, a combination of lack of coaching expertise and competition opportunities will result in more a decline in her specialist events (sprints and long jump).
e.g javelin is not exactly a strong event in women specialising in the event in this country!

Hopefully she will continue to develop in her events- why change what is working

I'd agree with this. Its been discussed here before and it always pops up in conversations about her. Jerry Kiernan is probably only saying it because when an athlete comes through in a shorter, technical event the only way they can succeed is to do an event that has more volume, ie, Gillick from 400 to 800, Kelly from 2 events to 7. Thats how Jerry sees things:)

Having said that Sotherton has a brutal javelin and most great heptathletes have been great long jumpers, for women multi-eventers it seems they can cross over very easily - Barber, Joyner, Kluft, Sotherton isn't bad - remember her little cat fight with Jade Johnson over who is the best long jumper in Britain:D

When talking about Kelly Proper at the Irish Indoors, Jerry Kiernan was actually mixing up 2 athletes. He said Kelly was 2nd in country only to Derval O' Rourke in Hurdles;in fact he was mixing up Kelly with a former club-mate, Mairead Murphy. Kelly hasn't jumped hurdles for a few years. Mairead is now running for DCU so I'm surprised Jerry made that mistake given they don't even wear same colours anymore

Is she not still with UCD or has she switched this season?

No, Mairead hasn't switched. Apologies- it was just a typo. She is running with UCD and looks nothing like Kelly Proper

kelly would make a brilliant multi eventer championship record in junior AAAS indoor but i think should give the long jump a good chance first on the europeen and world circuit first as she is exceptional at it :pac:
