I have a 2007 Passat 1.6 Petrol and have a car tax bill of €445 for the year.

I had a discussion with some lads in work about the severity of this and was told that if the emissions rate was lower, that I could go after this as opposed to paying the engine size rate.

    is this possible?

€445 is not bad in any case, IMO.

It has increased a couple of hundred percent in a few years so I would say . . .. yes it is.

One person said €445 pa car tax is 'not bad' - I said yes 'it is'. Meaning - yes it is bad to have to pay that amount of money in car tax.

I think he's questioning your assertion that 'It has increased a couple of hundred percent in a few years'. And if you think €445pa in road tax is bad, just wait till you meet Mr Depreciation.

Compared to the car tax cost of a 1.6ltr about say .... 4 or 5 yrs ago I would say it has at least increased by 100% wouldnt you ? In any event I would say that the cost IS bad which is the part that some people seem to disagree with.

I did not say that the greens couldnt possibly make it get any worse - I said that it IS bad.

No, not at all. Motor tax was greatly unchanged for quite a few years before the Co2 rates came in.

Eh, no - i'd be amazed if the cost of taxing a 1.6 had increased by even 50% in the past 5 years. And you said 'It has increased a couple of hundred percent in a few years', which is a couple of kilometres further again from the truth.

I must be tripping here - you reckon it cost €460 to tax a 1.6ltr car 5 yrs ago ?

For gods sake split hairs all you like - the fact is it has gone up massively compared to other eu countries & the civilised world. You think it represents value for money for motorists ? Reasonable ? €460 for a 1.6 and around €550 for a 1.8 each year ? Thats an insane amount of money.

Fine - you (& the green party) and me can agree to disagree on that one.

    .

What has any of that got to do with your statement? "It has increased a couple of hundred percent in a few years so I would say . . .. yes it is." Theres no mntion of other countries or it's value for money. You made a statement that is completely wrong.

At least find some figures from 5 or 6 years ago to show it's gone up "massively"

Split hairs??:D You said 'It has increased a couple of hundred percent in a few years', which is complete and utter bollox. You're now trying to tell us that it's 'gone up massively compared to other eu countries & the civilised world'. Do you have figures, or did you just make that one up too?:D

your current road tax may in fact be cheaper than the new system 08>
can you post your co2 rating it will be on your cars vlc, the petrol engine has higher emissions so may be cat.d=430euro ur cat.e=630euro on new system.

Motor tax rates for 2004 : five years ago
    1501cc>1600cc=391euro 1601cc>1700cc=414euro hope this helps

Sorry missed your question. No this is not possible as new rates only apply to 08reg cars.

Sure would. According to Parkers, assuming its a 1.6 manual, the Co2 output is 182g, which would mean €630 motor tax.

    THE FACTS
since 2004 it has cost €391 to tax a 1.6 engine
    that increased 9.5% effective in 2008 = €428
    that increased 4% effective in 2009 = €445.

Explain to me how that equates to an increase of more than 100%.

    You sound like Joan Burton:rolleyes:
