Bike for someone getting back into cycling

    Hi all,

I'm looking to get a new bike for someone in their late 50s who wants to get back cycling to improve their fitness. In their prime they would have done a lot of cycling so they would have been pretty comfortable on a bike.

Initially it is just for quick spins up and down to the shops but as their fitness improves they'd like something that would let them tackle longer cycles of 30-40kms and maybe more.

I was thinking that a full road bike might be a little uncomfortable at that age and that a mountain bike is obviously too heavy/no need for suspension etc. Hence I was thinking a flat bar road bike might be a good option?

Would anyone have suggestions for something around the €600 mark? I don't want to go much over this as I will need to leave a few bob for accessories but I don't mind buying on-line.

    Thanks in advance!

I owned a base-model Specialized Sirrus for around 4 years. I found it to be a great commuter, it takes panniers and mudguards, nice hybrid position which is neither too relaxed nor too aggressive, and comes in close to your budget.

    Cheers Beans!

I'll look into the Sirrus, it looks good!

Would this be similar to the FCR range in Giant?

    Thanks,

The '09 FCR 2 looks to be pretty close alright, specification-wise. I'm sure there are probably great bargains out there to be had if buying on-line...

Actually this was done recently enough, you'll find more learned opinions there :)
