Lack of interest in Irish!

I recently reserved a place on a beginners Irish conversation course here in Athlone.
Unfortunately it was cancelled :( as there were only four applicants, would this be because of a lack of interest in adults learning Irish or a symptom of the recession.

Anyway anything else happening (as in Irish lessons) in the Athlone area?

Not a lack of interest. I think there is a major interest in Irish all over Ireland but most are apprehensive as they fear looking like an eegit not knowing the basics of their "native" language.
Almost everyone I know claims that they'd love to be able to speak it but dont really make an effort. I made an effort myself a few years ago and Im getting there.
I intend to start or help start a conversation class in my area and most Ive siad it to will come along and see what its like. It wont be til the summer though so maybe if you get into the ears of your friends you could set one up yourself. Im sure theres a few fluent Gaelgoirs around the area that could help set it up.
I think all is needed in most cases like this is a good organiser.

Go n'éirí an t-ádh leat mo chara
