    Just a quick question:

If someone went to sign on for Jobseekers Benefit in the morning would they get the choice to have the payment put into their bank account or collect it in the post office or has the rules to this changed??

    Thanks

You have to collect it in the p/o for 6 months, then you can get it lodged into your bank account. It's to keep the fraud element down.

Unless it has been changed recently that is not correct, I was able to get it into my bank account from day one, that was about 4 years ago!

It was changed early last year.

    And it's paid in cash.

Are they still doing this? I've been on and off welfare for a while. I used to get paid into the bank but the last time I signed on they said I had to collect it in the post office, even though I had been getting it in the bank before. But I've been on it over 6 months this time.

Is this definitely true? Sources? My six months is approaching and I'd happily give up my weekly visit to the post office.

My brother says he gets paid every week by cheque which arrives in the post on thursday, I may be signing on myself the way things are looking at work :(

Well, you can either go into your welfare office, queue up and ask them. Or ring them. My mate told me the other day, as he was collecting his. He said not long left for him till they lodge it into his account. He'd never leave his gaff then. He's not bothered bout getting a job either, welfare pay for his flat aswell.

All new or repeat unemployment payments will be paid only into a post office, for the first six months. This has been the situation since last summer. After that you can apply to get the payments made into a bank account. Only existing payments continue to be paid by bank transfer.

People on casual employment eg working a 3 day week, get their payments by cheque. Cheques are issued weekly on a Friday, and are usually received on a Tuesday/Wednesday.

    AngelD,

Your bf's claim must have been authorised just before the regulations changed. Payments are no longer paid initially into bank accounts.
