A search through here to find my thread on it would be good. Few people have commented on getting there and the festival.

Yep I went last year, doing the twin festival Rock Im Park this year.

We flew to Frankfurt Main airport (not to be confused with Frankfurt Hahn), from Dublin with Aer Lingus. Flights were about €140 or so, so hopefully you'll get them for a similar decent price.
Then we got a train to a place called Koblenz, takes about 2 hours and it cost about €40 or so return. In Koblenz there's a few shops including Lidl, so you can stock up on booze and stuff.
Lastly we got a shuttle bus on to the festival site, takes about an hour (buses do be crammed too) and it cost about a tener.

I'd say to make sure you book a late flight to return on the Monday after, to give plenty of time to get back to Frankfurt if you decide to do this route.

The festival itself is amazing, the only problems I'd have with it is the layout of the main stage area, and the fact that its in the middle of nowhere. Thats one of the reasons we're trying out Rock Im Park this year, I hear its in a more built up area. Had a brillinant time, it was 6 of the best days of my life.

Anyhoo if you've any questions or want to know any more just ask here or drop me a PM
    Enjoy
    :)

I did it the Ryanair Frankfurt Hahn way last year, would have been a good way to go about it if Ryanair didn't move our cancel our flight home:mad: so we ended up having to get a 6am flight on the tuesday. Which was a horrible sleep in the airport.

This year we are gonna go the Air Lignus route, deciding whether we should go Dusseldorf airport or Frankfurt Main.

What was it like travelling by train down to Koblenz from Frankfurt Main? Was it awkward or easy?

Had such a great time last year, you could start a conversation with anyone from nothing and end up hanging out with them all night!

I loved that it was in the middle of nowhere, meant the music could go real late!

Dead handy, and the shuttle buses that leave Koblenz are only a minute or two of a walk from the train station.

One thing I forgot to add is that when youre getting the train back from Koblenz to Frankfurt Main airport (if youre going that way), make sure its the direct one, not the one that goes to the city centre. I think every second train does.
The trains both ways are regular enough, I think hourly.

The people were brilliant, like you said its just a matter of striking up convo with someone and bob's yer uncle, instant drinking buddies for the night.
People leaving huge sound systems hooked up to laptops for music, fridges etc being run by generators in the campsites on show and it didnt cross anyones mind to nick anything, really friendly vibe about the place.
Amazing that for the price of a ticket for, eh, that festival, you'd nearly have your ticket and a flight to this too :pac:

Dude can you tell me how you went about getting the tickets? This page lets you buy tickets but it seems to be in Sterling only? http://www.seatwave.com/rock-am-ring-tickets/season?AffID=0000&utm_source=Affiliate%2BWindow&utm_medium=Affiliates
Me and a few mates have been wanting to go to this for years!

I notice Die Toten Hosen aren't playing this year, pity

    thanks for the info Bo

I'd recommend either of these sites
    http://www.eventim.de
got mine off here last year but delivery was around €30:eek:

    also
    http://www.tickets-per-post.de
Got them off this site this year, delivery was €16
If you use this one, where you enter the delivery address there isn't enough room so just reply to the confirmation email with your full address and they'll correct it

Both sites recommended by RAR website and in € too:cool:

Might be of interest to some people going to know that ryanair do a flight from kerry airport to frankfurt-hahn, might be easier option for some than flights from dublin

Also for those flying over there's a crowd based in the uk that organise a coach from certain airports to the festival and back, stop en route at a supermarket for supplies, works out at around 44euro per head return

both festivals are awesome very true about the instant drinking buddies,

preferred rock im park because town was a free 10 minute tram ride away,
but we found a village on the outskirts of rock im ring where there was a cafe and a real toilet which was nice.

be weary of accidentally buying sparkling water.

I went in 2001 and flew aer lingus to Frankfurt Main

Think we had to get 3 trains to the village we were staying in, i can't quite remember the name, but it was about 20mins from the festival.

As regards the trains, they worked like clockwork, extremely reliable and enjoyable.

Might have changed since then though :)

I havent been to rock am ring but after being to rock im park, i'd def head back there esp fomr what ive heard about rock am ring. RIP is in such a good location, its just so handy, after you get off the train in nuremberg, tram is right outside, can hop on for free (coz its so busy) and takes you right to the festival in 2mins, you could not get lost. There so much around nuremberg itself, the train station alone is more than enough to supply all the food and drink you need, its like a big shopping centre. I dont think rock am ring can boast a lil village on the outskirts with real toilets, there are showers etc in the train station not that you would ever need them, the facilities in rock im park are great, there are actually proper toilets there and sink rooms and separate shower rooms if youre bothered about that. But i found the whole stage layouts just so good as well, unlike some festivals where you would just stay at the one stage coz its so impossible to get to the next, you can easily wander between stages, the club stage is an indoor ice hockey rink or something which really suits, good to get out of the sun there early on, always a great atmosphere in it. ok so i could write forever on how good rock im park is!

I think i am heading to RIP this year after my friend went last year and said it was one of the best festivals he has been to. The line up is pretty good this year.

Anyone no any village/city that is close to the RIP site to stay there possibly before/after the festival? Im gonna talk to my friend who went last year and see what he did when travelling.

Just realised that Trivium are on the poster twice i think

What airport do you fly into when going to RIP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

I flew to Karlsruhe-Baden last year, tiny lil airport and trained it from there, this was the cheapest way at that time but definitely not a popular route. Didnt mind the journey, the trains are so reliable and easy to find connnections. Ryanair did manage to f**k it up quite a bit with delays though. If I get to go this year (still tryin to convince people!) think I might just fly to Frankfurt Hahn as most people do and train it from there, its not any quicker but theres good deals at the moment. Saw return flights for 16 yo yos!! And the connections after that come to about 50 odd euro. Ive looked into all possible routes last year, the only straightforward one is flying with KLM or someone (big bucks) to nuremburg, but could fly aer lingus to munich and train it, it'd mean less connections but honestly its no big deal to catch the connections, when you book with bahn, every connection, be it train/bus/tram, every platform, waits between stops, intermediate stops etc will be itemized for you. Let me know if you need any more help.

Don't think I'd use Frankfurt Hahn for RIP - as far as I remember Hahn airport'd be possibly on the same side of Frankfurt as RAR, so maybe useful for connecting to there.

RIP is in Nurnburg, which is a largish city so accomodation would be fine there. Nurnburg may have its own airport? alternative non-ryanair options would be main frankfurt or munich airports and then get the train.

There used to be cheaper travel on the fast trains after a certain time in the evening - could be worth checking out when timing your flights...

Yea i was checking flights to nuremburg but they would set me back at least €300 so its a bit expensive. Do Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly into the same airport in Frankfurt or are there 2 different one's , because on aer lingus it says Frankfurt but on ryanair it says frankfurt hahn. Just wondering are they the same airports.

My friend went to RIP last year so will prob talk to him what he did when he gets back from france

Frankfurt and Frankfurt Hahn are different - Hahn is miles to the west of Frankfurt, legally I didn't think they could advertise it as Frankfurt anymore?
The budget airlines are probably the cheapest way to go, but make sure you price and time your connections for when you land.
Once or twice I've gotten the last flight out of Dublin to Stanstead and then first flight in the morning from Stanstead on into Germany - be imaginative :)
use http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml for looking up train links

Cheers for that. i was looking at going from stansted to nuremburg and it would cost €138 which im guessing it isnt bad since i wouldnt have to worry about gettin trains from all different directions. tickets from dub-stan would be maybe €30.

Not sure if they have been announce but Buckcherry have confirmed they are playing on there myspace :). There latest album is unreal so i would love to hear " Crazy B***h" and "To Drunk To F**k" live :)
