O2 give you 250 webtext to both Ireland and abroad - the others only allow webtext to Ireland.

Vodafone texts to Australia are 15 cents each. Online VoipCheap SMS texts are the best value I've found at 3 cents each, but to purchase 10 euro credit from them costs 12.66 (VAT & handling charges) - still the best value all round though.
Skype SMS texts are about 8cents, but again, 10 euro credit costs 11.50.

You'll need to put the O2 SIM into a phone once to register on the website. After that you need to make a chargable call or text every 6 months or else topup every 6 months to keep it active.

You usually get about 50c free credit. You only have to reduce this by 1c every 6 months. So you're in business.
