    Hi All,

I am increasingly getting these .docx in from people and need to open them. I have Word 2004 (V11.5.3) installed, and it goes looking for an upgrade when I try to open a .docx file. When I try to install the upgrade it tells me it cannot find the correct application. Is there any easy way to open these .docx files? If I muck about in Dreamweaver I can open them, but they loose formatting etc in a big way and its all a bit complicated and messy.

This is driving me nuts and any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks in advance

You can use this site to convert to .doc.

Alternatively, OpenOffice 3.x can handle .docx files.

    Make sure you're the admin

Use microsoft upater to update your 2004 package to the latest version, unfortunately M$ don't do combo updates so each update will have to be downloaded then applied seperately, one at the final update version, then download the plug-in or update that allows 2004 to open docx files (office 2008) or alternatively tell your clients to set their prefs to save .doc as opposed to the xml (docx) ones.

Think the best solution is to get them to save it in .doc format....M$ making life awkward again...

    Thanks for the replies

If you're running Tiger or Leopard then M$ make a conversion utility called Open XML Converter that you should be able to run.

You can download a DMG of it here:
