There was Premier League soccer on Sky Sports this Saturday, is this a new arrangement? Have Sky acquired the rights for Saturdays or was it a one off?

Sky always have the 12.30 KO on a Saturday, Sellotanta have the 3 and 5.30 games

They have access to certain matches - usually the big games that kick off on Saturday at 12.45pm - usually Merseyside or Manchester derby!

Think the Man Utd - Liverpool game on March 14 is a 12.45pm ko!

The new Sky packages announced during the week are for the 2010 season, for 3 years...

The new contracts for 2010 means that Setanta lose the Monday night Premiership matches and Sky will have the Monday nights instead.

Anti-competitive though it may be, I miss the days when Sky had the lot. Now you need 2 subscriptions if you want to watch the football and that's just not sustainable, especially when people are looking for ways to save money.

You might say competition helps keeps prices competitive, but I certainly can't remember Sky dropping the package prices (by any significant amount) - EVER! In fact, exactly the opposite is true. Despite increased competition in recent years from UKTV, Virgin, FX and even the terrestrials, the top package is still dearer than ever.

When Sky had all the football, you had to pay for Sky Sports, and also PPV for Premiership Plus games (or get a "season ticket"). Mind you, Sky Sports and Prem+ season ticket still cheaper than Sky Sports and Setanta Sports.

Setanta or anyone else don't/didn't have enough market share to force Sky Sports to become cheaper.

Even without Premiership+ you'd still get 98% of the top games on Sports 1.
Plus there were half-price season tickets for about 2 months before the season started if you did want it, although if I remember right (I may not :)) figures were down for the last year or two it operated.

yes, usually half price season tickets in July €75. I used to be a sky subscriber and had sports and the PPV football. Got rid of it all when setanta came in. Ive tried having only Setanta, but now in the process of getting rid of them as well, Like us all cutting costs and saving the pennies!

Took advantage of an offer over Christmas, but since there's only been about 3 matches since then that I was interested in - with the rest of the time Sky showing irrelevant rubbish like cricket - it's just not worth it; it's over a tenner a game!

And it'll double when the offer is over! :o

That equates to about 4 pints while the odd match is on in the local (which means you get the pints AND the match) so that will probably be the scenario when the offer runs out next month.

    I'm in a catch 22 situation too.

I'm following Liverpool FC for 35years and i have been subscribing to Sky Sports ever since it commenced in 1987 i think?

Setanta show 99% of Liverpools bread and butter games on Saturdays and then Sky show all Liverpools big showdown games against the big teams like Man U etc.

I know if i quit subscribing now fate will have it that Liverpool will win the Premiership.

I would love to quit it all and just buy th eHumax Freesat PVR and just stay away from all media and watch Match of the Day each week.

    I'd save approximately €1,716

I am currently paying for Sky+ HD full sub, 2 multiroom subs and same for Setanta.

Seems crazy when you total the cost per year. Any all i watch is the odd game and my kids just like Simpsons and Disney Channel.

Do whatever you have to do so they dont win the league. Will setanta drop the sub price now they have lost the footie package. Only reason i subscribed to them

Unfortunatly mate theres more to sport than just Soccer! Soccer is where the money is, But then there is huge interest in different regions of UK/Ireland for other sports like, Rugby, Cricket, Motorsport etc. All tastes have to be catered for.

Me for one love watching cricket, Its a spectators sport (Especially going to the 5 day tests) Ive a huge interest in this Indian premier league thats becoming a huge thing in cricket. Fast action matches that have brought a bit of a buzz to the game? Setanta have this at the moment but i can guess now the English players have got signed up for it, Sky will soon get their mits on it as its all becoming money orientated!

But its such a shame now the punter has to have 2 Subs to 2 different companys to watch the FAPL!

Blimey never really realised how much it all costs?

Perhaps you should consider a foreign sub and get a lot more games than sky/Setanta show? Im a Spurs fan (No laughing) i havent missed 1 of their matches this season if ive been in!

You possibly wouldnt have your Sky+ facility, But to be honest i find enough to watch on my foreign sub thats on sky to keep me going.

How much does the Foreign sub cost roughly?

My local pub has foreign sub and i hear good reports and that commentary is even in English most of time?

    Bit of a thread here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055484112

I have canal+ Sweden which cost me around £500 for full package (Sport, movies & HD). Its only a few of the HD games that are not in English for me, but i delay 5 live audio through a laptop for these games.

It's actually ironic that it's cheaper to watch the Premierleague outside Ireland and sometimes the UK! I love football but money is ruining the game now.
I remember paying way less and watching most of the top four teams every week end back in France, not to mention the underrated Spanish and Italian championship...
Shop around and save your money for what really matters!

P.S: Canal+ Sweden seems to be 209KR (20€) per month for all EPL games! I don't understand swedish so don't quote me on that. Only 2 options, you know someone in Sweden... or you go to a retailer

yes i know its cheaper from sweden but i dont have an address or know anyone there! Retailer is the only way. I have the full package including HD.I think last year i paid £525. Digitlalb is a lot cheaper (£200 for 12 months) but no HD, coverage not to proffesional but mostly in English. No 3pm saturday kickoffs though. Art is very cheap and chearfull but price reflects it. Sky Italia deals seem over now which are a shame as £139 for 3 months was a bargin for full package plus a receiver.

I reckon Setanta will be under severe pressure for subscribers season after next in the UK. Average punter over there isn't going to pay a monthly sub when all he sees is 2 or maybe 3 matches a month for his money. Most UK subscribers aren't subbing to Setanta for anything other than the soccer.

Over here in Ireland, they will suffer as well, people will suddenly find 23 live matches gone to Sky. They will have to bring the price down significantly.

    Interesting times ahead!

Really? What percentage subscribe for premiership football? An approximation will do.

Any chance you could maybe let me know where you got the Canal+ subscription from, a lot of the sites i visited had it a fair bit more expensive than that. I've had Digitalb for the past 3 years buts its disappointed me this year with the no show of the 3pms on a sat and the picture quality still leaves a lot to be desired, I would'nt mind paying an extra £250 (Digitalb is roughly around £280 now since they increased the price in September) for a choice of 3 matches on a saturday and all the S*y matches in HD as i've no intention of getting S*y HD, well not for the next couple of years anyway, I already have a 1.2 metre motorised dish and a few CA and CI satellite receivers but naturally I'll have to get a HD one, does the card need to be "married" to the receiver like s*y or will any do the job?

God be with the good old days of ART Sports!

I probably won't be purchasing anything till July at this stage anyway but any information will be greatly received, thanks.

Does anyone know who has the rights for the 3pm Saturday games, have Setanta lost that yet because if they have I think they will be doomed in Ireland.

Its a shame within this economic downturn we are all going through that Sky dont have a sports subscription like on the continent? Different subs for different sports packs.

Sky could implement a cheaper subscription tier for just soccer on its own or sports with no soccer on its own (I know a lot of people that dont watch soccer but have to pay full sub for sports) or have the full sub for the whole sports spectrum?

I obviously don't know that do I, but from threads on Digital Spy that seems to be the opinion. In fairness most of the Setanta stuff, besides Premier League soccer is average sport which most people wouldn't subscribe especially for.

Stuff like Blue square premier, UFC, Magners(Carling cup equivalent)League Rugby, Horse Racing ,Indian cricket. Lets face it, that is sport which large numbers of people aren't going to get too excited about.

I believe that the agreement announced last week (i.e Sky 5 packages ans Setanta 1 with Setanta losing Monday night) applies only to the UK - packes for ROI yet to be agreed/announced which includes the sat 3pm game (not available unless with a ROI subscription) -

I think if the Setanta Ireland football package goes down from the current 79 games to only 56 games they may need to reduce the prices to maintain their levels of business.

Suggested prices Setanta UK£7.99 per month.
    Setanta IRL €12.99 per month.

Probably no chance of this though! Unless of course market forces dictate...

Of course. They would be foolish not to.
