Problem with flatmate's box

Apologies in advance if the subject of my post is not allowed here.

We currently have 2 NTL cable points in our house with a basic analogue service. A housemate has one of the points in their bedroom with one of those dodgy **** boxes. The rest of us in the house use the living room point with just the basic channels. I recently noticed on the NTL website that you can get basic digital with a DVR for just €25 a month. We don't watch a massive amount of TV, but the picture/sound improvement along with the DVR makes it very attractive and is next to nothing more expensive than just analogue. Personally I don't endorse the use of those dodgy boxes and would prefer to keep everything above board. My housemate disagrees with this principle and believes that if we get a digibox in to the house it will somehow rat him out to NTL, or that they will change how the service is delivered to the house and his box won't work in his room anymore.

Can anyone confirm for me if this is true? We just want to get the new digibox with DVR in the living room with basic digital channels, while at the same time our housemate can still use his box upstairs. Yes I know you are all probably shouting "f*ck the other tennant out on their ear". The problem is, is that they are related to our landlord and this place suits us perfectly for now.

    Any ideas?

Irish law precludes us from discussion of this except to point out that
    1) A dodgy box involves Theft of service (criminal) and Copyright Infringement (civil).
    2) Those aiding in this are guilty of same offence
    3) Obstructing an investigation is a crime.

If Boards & ISP got a court order you location would be found and could be searched.

    However
Everything does use the same cable connection.
Ultimately the box will stop working
He may be found out anyway.

Criminal prosecution (Theft of Service) is limited to about 8,000 Eur. Getting sued (civil copyright) you pay their costs and any amount of damages they ask for that Judge/Jury deems reasonable.
