Toxic ship to get scrapped in the UK after being rejected by Egypt & India

A French aircraft carrier that was so packed with toxins that India and Egypt refused to touch and has sent it right back to Europe where it has arrived at a British dock to be dismantled.

Over the next few years, 700 tons of asbestos will be stripped from the Clemenceau and dumped in a nearby landfill site.

The arrival is a bitter blow for environmental campaigners who have called the 33,000-ton carrier 'a ticking toxic timebomb'

It looks just like another Brent Spar but worse, but I suppose the UK is well used of Toxic dumps with places such as Cellafield.

Dont bother to mention the fact the the UK has a facility specifically designed to cater for such ships and has been working on a number of other decommissioned US warships for some time.

Teesside Reclamation and Recycling Centre (TERRC) at Graythorp, near Hartlepool is the company that does it.

The Daily Mail didn't tell us that :p

Like Cumbria, I can imagine property prices in the area.

It was on that programme "Coast" a few months back too. To say it's a bit controversial in the first place would be an understatement.

They should have just towed it off the Somalian coast, sank it and blame the Pirates. :D

According to a more reliable source, like the Guardian, yes they're getting £3.5 million for it, not counting all the valuable scrap metal. It sounds much better than being dismantled on a beach in India.

French carrier attempting to surrender, sunk by monkey-hating pirates off Somalian coast, along with 700 tons of valuable cargo.

It's being scrapped in the UK because the shipyard has some of the highest safety standards in the world and is equipped to deal with it, unlike India and Egypt. Furthermore, there is not 700 tonnes of asbestos, there is 700 tonnes of matter which is contaminated with asbestos, which is in fact present in a much smaller quantity.
