    hi

i tried setting up a similar thread a week or two back but i cant seem to find it now.apologies to the mods if i did something i shouldnt have.

anyway,i had referred to the fact that there is now one of them titlesit approved golf fitness consultants at the academy in carton house.

i was wondering if anyone has ever been to a fitness instructor such as this and did they find it worthwhile?

    thanks

Hi the person you need to see is Orlaith Buckley, she works with all of the national teams, you could get her number from the gui. She is the best by a long way

    that good then?

my pro has suggested I see someone, and I do struggle with my back a bit. GUI pushing the chap out there, and that would be my default choice.

The journey to Rush worth it?

I think the best way to approach it is to get yourself fit - and I mean endurance level fit.

Train so that you can do a good 5km run and then a 10k run. Going to a Golf Fitness coach if you're 20stone will only result in you being told the obvious!

If you struggle with your back I would go see an Osteopath rather than a physio, at least initially. I had some issues with my neck and back and went to a physio but after a couple of treatments he referred me on to a spinologist who corrected some bones in the back... because the bones weren't aligned properly the muscles were under more tension and physio alone wasn't enough to relieve or correct the problem.

My brother-in-law has since qualified as an Osteopath and now I can get treatments from him which IMO are much more detailed and involved than the spinologist was... The spinologist certainly cracked me back into shape but I felt he didn't do a detailed enough assessment... Osteopathy seems to be much more involved in solving the issues rather than just a quick fix IMO.

I could do with building up strength using a rowing machine and greatly improving flexibility (my hamstrings are unbelievably tight) but I'm not nearly disciplined enough to stick to any routine. I'm trying swimming at the moment for general fitness but I find it a bit of a struggle too.

You might laugh but I'd say that Pilates or something like that would be of great benefit because being more flexible and having better posture and particularly balance would help us hackers more than having muscles on muscles.

Pilates is all about strengthening your core muscles so not that stupod an idea.

The Academy did Pilates for Golf last year - not into that myself but horses for courses as they say.

I think I read something about the National Panel members in GUI doing yoga too.

Well yeah. Fitness is something of an issue - but BMI is on the lower side of the normal range, so it's a small bit of an endurance issue. 100 strokes, with 2 practice ones in between each will wear anyone out ;) I'm trying to get out running, and will add some core exercises to the mix.

Orlaith Buckley's site reads as follows
"For beginners it assists in limiting the number of compensations they may develop while learning to play golf. For all other golfers it corrects any compensation that they may have already developed and in so doing can improve consistency and distance."

    http://www.golfphysioclinic.com/index.htm

and some of that is likely to be basic stuff. I do need to see someone about my neck and back, and all the better if it's someone sympathetic to the particular demands I'm placing on the body - modest that they may be.

    thanks for the feedback folks.

myself,i do a general fitness programme and a physio programme for a bad back. but i think that a golf specific fitness coach might help a lot by giving relevant exercises for the key muscles used in the swing. id have to alternate between the 3 different programmes then id say!

the guy at the academy must be one of the best of his kind if they have recruited him?

did anyone else find out anything by any chance about the service? if not,ill enquire next time im there

its something id probably be interested in

Choose wisely! If you are suffering back pain then it is best to go to someone who can treat the pain & identify the cause.
I've worked with people who have had "fitness programs" for golf & their posture is appalling! No amount of strengthening etc will work if your posture is off. Get your back fixed first! The wrong exercises could make it worse
