Its 1 litre 99 opel corsa. The Speedometer/odometer arent working. My NCT is up this month, and im learning to drive, so it would help to have a speedometer, you know, to tell me if im speeding etc.

My dad said a mechanic said it will cost a few hundred quid to fix, and the car isnt worth that(which it isnt).

Is there any other way around fixing it??

Did you check the speedo cable?

Seem to remember connecting one in a GTi Corolla a few years ago, awkward but definitely not a few hundred quid worth of a job.

That's if it is the cable that's the problem.

i think the 99 corsa has a digital speedo, look on top of the gearbox there should be a small wire goin to a sensor on it, it could be that sensor, a friend had to change it in his corsa a while back

@carface, yeah everything else on the dash is working, its just the speedometer and odometer.

@guil07, i dont know what im looking for, but i'll have a look in the morning! is that sensor expensive to replace?

cool, i'll have a look at that in the morning....

Also, in terms of the NCT, is crash damage something they can fail you on? The damage being the front passenger panel is pretty badly dented. It doesnt actually affect the driving of the car at all. It just looks bad...

    Check the fuses....
I had a 98 corsa with same problem, the speedo didn't work, but all other items on dash did, the "power steering assitence" wasn't working, so the car just felt a bit heavey to drive... once I got around to checking it out I found it was a simple fuse....

    worth checking out

as long as its only cosmetic and not structural damage you should be fine.

is that sensor expensive to replace?

shouldn't exceed the value of the car anyway !!!

Check main dealer for price. Opel parts are usually cheap enough. Should be easy to pick one up in a breakers yard anyway ... lots of these Corsas around.

More of a problem will be checking out if the sensor is gone or not. Easy enough if you have the right tools but not DIY. If you are sure it's gone then changing the sensor probably is diy job.

Try asking the stores man in the dealer if he sells these sensors ... if there is an inherent fault with them then he'll know 'cos he'll have sold lots. In that case debug is not as critical; you could just gamble fitting one.
