Ex US Army Landing Craft in Galway

I was taking a walk out around the docks in Galway today with my son to blow the cobwebs out of the camera and came across this. It is an ex US Army Landing Craft Utility by the name of Chateau-Thierry. I have done a couple of searches and have found that it has the reg LCU-1679 and was retired in Nov 2002 and that is about all. Anyone know anything else about it?, Where it was before it was in Galway?, what it is doing here? and where it is heading for if any further?

You know as I drove past it a few times. I thought it looked kind of military. Must have a closer look. I guessed it would probably be used to ferry stuff to the Aran and other island what with the ramp and all. Msut have a closer look next time I'm on the docks.

Yer, I was thinking that it could be used as a small ferry across a river somewhere as well.

Not too sure. I have found that these craft were built between 1967 and 1976 so I suppose it could have been.
