What a glorious day it was today, was out on a lovely long spin turned up a really steep hill, geared down on back derailer, then moved to small front ring and disaster, whatever happened the rear derailer bent itself backwards catching the chain and I came to a rapid hault as the derailer stopped the back wheel by getting in the way of one of the spokes. Then I spent 45mins waiting for a lift home, gutted!!!!!! I hope its not gona be an expensive fix cos Im broke!

If your lucky, its just the derailleur hanger/drop out thats broken. If its more serious, you may have damaged/bent/broken the derailleur itself, and quite possibly broken a few spokes! Put up a picture if you can, or just a more detailed description of what the story is. That way we can be more specific on what the problem is. Easiest solution would probably take it to the lbs. They will tell you exactly whats wrong in a few seconds and whats invloved with fixing it (hopefully an estimate on how much it will cost too!). If it's a bit steep, you could search the net for the required parts and fix it yourself! (thats provided you know what your doing). Good luck!

This happened once to me - in shifting to the large sprocket on the rear, the deraileur overshot, catching the wheel and destroying the mech and hanger.

This was a result of my first attempt at aligning the gears, I soon learned the importance of limit-screws :o

Turns out I was lucky just wrecked the dropou, brought it up to Nigels yesterday, and he laughed saying it happens to everyone once, new part about 20euro

your chain looks VERY dry. when's the last time you lubed it?
(edit - nothing to do with the problem of course, just an observation)

I had planned on oiling the chain when I came home, but I have been a little slack admittedly
