Kip bars in Dublin or further a field.

Being a recession and all as an antidote to the pretentious trendy bars which infest the city I'm in search of something different.

You know the ones, cheap and cheerful, colourful patrons preferably saw dust and spit on the floor type places. A history of violence will not be viewed in a negative light.

    Ideas?

Dont know about it being violent or a kip but if you want something straight out of the 1950's take a trip to O'Loughlin's (Loughies) in DunLaoghaire, you wont be disappointed, its a god damn timewarp, the ladies still sit in the snug and the mens toilet is a wall and drainpipe out the back of the pub.

Try Cleary's on Amiens Street, close enough to Connoly Station, its been done up but it still a REAL pub.. and one of the cheapest pints in dublin..

The Celt on talbot street ain't bad either but can have some tourists (don't know if thats a good or bad thing), or the Dark Horse or Molloys(i think) at the bottom of Talbot street..

Cussacks on the Strand ain't bad either........

The Annsley House facing the fire brigade station in fairview strand/ballybough junction.......

Funny, I don't think of places like those as kips, but rather as proper pubs. If somebody asked me to name some kip pubs in Dublin I'd include the likes of Cafe en Seine, Samsara, Ron Blacks, Cocoon, etc.

I wouldn't say they were kips either, I was stating that they were real pubs as oppose to fancy rip off so called trendy pubs...

I didn't take the Kip or History of violence part of his question serious as he wants to enjoy himself in a decent pub rather than a trendy yuppie bar..

I realise that, I was merely making the point that my definition of a kippy pub is one of those modern bars, whereas I've brought people into places like Mulligans or Kehoes and they thought they were awful kips while I was happy as a pig in shíte.

how about that pub down on the quays....Leonards, i think its called......its like stepping back to the 70s-80s.....a real dismal kip

Kennedys on the quays beside Tara Street dart station. They done up the jacks though.
Clearys on Amiens street is great for a pint! Massive pub inside.
Molloys at the top of Buckingham Street on the corner of Summerhill is fairly ropey.

    The Brock Inn:eek:

Went in there once and there was a big log dangling on the toilet seat, shot thru with what looked like sweet corn and plum tomatoes.

    UUUUrgh.

There's a place on pearse street. It's an oldstyle pub (no D4s or yuppies) but it's still a pretty nice place. It's clientele are a nice mix of oldies and the common-sensical trinity students (again,no D4s or yuppies :)).

It's the kind of pub where you can order a pint of guinness, sit by the open fire and look at the vintage cigarette ads on the walls, and the crazy old crap in the display cases :D.

Wow. So, you're saying that there were more yuppies during the last recession, then after the economic boom?.

I used to DJ in the strand house, not really a kip as such, but just round the corner from sherrif street. A guy started hitting a woman who accidently fell into his wife one time!

Anywhere on Sherrif street is a sure bet for a ****hole.

Well I never had any trouble with my kit as the ex's brother and sister in law used to live round the corner, so we knew a lot of the people in the pub!

Ah good old finches, it was done up a few years back looks much better now. I go there the odd time to watch the football during the week ropey spot definately a no go for an outsider!

I used to Dj a few years back, mainly 21sts 40ths all that ****3 i've seen some kips in my time, the worst was definately The Cappagh House in Finglas, myself and my mate done our first gig there we were 16 at the time it was terryfying, it was kind of like the pub out of shameless.

That was closely followed by the Silken Thomas on francis street, a smelly little kip by all accounts!

To the OP, if you're looking for a kip of a pub with cheap gargle and good atmosphere look no further than Fibbers on Parnell street on a Thursday, 3 euro a drink all night long and good craic if you look past the general smelliness!!

    edit:

Just remembered there another extremely kippy place, the chancery on the keys, one of a few early houses in Dublin, myself and a couple of friends went there last year the morning after good friday after an all nighter, it started off well and then reality hit! There's some characters to be found in there. I'd like to think i'll never go there again but somewhere deep down in my heart i crave another drink and drugged fuelled rampage in the chancery. My experience there was something similar to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Why would you even ask to DJ in there? You can tell from the outside just how bad it's gonna be. It's certainly one of the less classy pubs in Finglas :p

I hadn't got a choice, i was working for a Dj company at the time, it was myself and my mate so it wasn't too bad, i would never have gone there alone. We done a few gigs there actually, it was basically just us playing in the bar to the regulars it was a pretty funny set up because the room wasn't that big from what i remember and we were set up on a stage with all the tables and chairs facing us, it was kind of intimidating. They were so close to us they used to just shout up requests rather than come up and ask. They used to make us sort out the raffle too, that was also pretty bizzare.

Toast in Rathmines has gone through funny stages. 10 years ago it was knackerville, and slowly but surely they cleaned it up. It was great over the last year, and over last Christmas, minimum security and grief. Sadly since Tram Co has closed it's gone back to being a bit of a kip again due to the Tram Co overspill.

    shame:(

The perfect pub you are seeking in Dublin doesn't exist. There is always something wrong. And if you can't find something wrong the price and opening hours will interfere with your night out.
    The local pub is dead,

I love Nash's on Thomas St, and Slattery's and Mother Reilly's (both in Rathmines).

But not forgotten. :pac:As an as yet not, but soon to be, oft cited didactic paragon. If they don't drop their prices. I mean their trousers.

If you're looking for a daaaay-sent pub tung fella, you could try Ryans on Queen street, Sin E on Ormand Quey, Brogans on Dame st, the Long Hall, JJ Smyths on Georges st, Ryans of Wexford st, Mulligans and Chaplins around from the Screen cinema. All good spots.
+1 for Kennedy's by Tara st station, those toilets were something else!

The Lower Deck on Portobello Bridge is a great little pub that isn't populated by c'unts.

Also, Berminghams on Dorset St. Total kip, deadly Guinness, 1970's decor ftw

Ah good shout on The Lower Deck, went to a gig downstairs there before great little setting, it was kinda like a house party.

Another one i'll throw into the ring is The Bernard Shaw on richmond street(top of Camden st. leading into Portobello) great spot, always have good dj's playing at the weekends, great vibe, pool table in the beer garden too.

hardly a kip bar though, gone pretty fancy since the name changed and it was done up. Was a proper kip bar when it was Bambricks.
