Guys, some of you need to read the title and opening post - it's great indie pop song, not great indie song.
And some of the YouTube embedding isn't happening. Check it and if this is the case, just paste the link. Thanks.

Love it. Really reminds me of 80s slightly funk flavoured stuff like Orange Juice, Aztec Camera etc.
(btw, my version of the Electronic album is on Parlophone. Was it originally releasd on an indie label?)
Yup. Factory. Some outstanding songs on that album.

possibly the most incongruous looking indie pairing ever, but a great song nonetheless...

The Strings make me feel seasick!

See ole Butler is involved with 'The NEW Tom Jones' ........... i.e Duffy?

    Cannonball-The Breeders,
    Spring Rain-The Go-Betweens,
    Laid-James,
    Sometimes-James.

    Thats my tuppence worth.

A Town Called Malice - The Jam I think qualifies.

Too catchy for its own good.

Bernard likes his sixties retro production. He also did the Black Kids album, and there's loads of almost Mamas/Papas style vocals on that as well.

Methinks, Paul, you're not a fan of 'old' sounding songs, judging by your dislike for the Boos and McAlmont & Butler. It's precisely that, plus the bangingness of the songs that gets me. Potayto/Potahto, guess.

I think Butlers finest sixties homage was the faux-Spector production on this

It's got a hint of Bowies Absolute Beginners about it with the crashing guitar on it, but the sound of the drums/strings in it is PURE Spector, and I mean that, alleged girlfriend killing aside, in a good way :D I'd dearly love to hear the Ronnettes having a rattle at it! Also love the bit at around 2:50 where it's just the drums, the tempo slows down and it all just revs up again...

Normally, i'm the first to diss rip-off merchants; on the other hand, if you're gonna do homage, then if it's done with this level of aplomb, I can't help but admire it...

Well if it's 'great indie pop song',not 'great indie song' and the likes of Electronic are being mentioned then EMF's unbelievable deserves a mention.

But I love the Sons and Daughters album produced by Bernard ! I just remember that Mc/B track cos the strings were so out of tune.

You're not wrong. I saw them in McGonagles in '91 was it?

McGonagles was 92 after the release of their second album.(great album it was too.) Think it was the SFX in 91.

Thought of a few more 'great indie pop songs'

    Happy Mondays - Step On
    The Farm - Groovy Train

Would Adamski's Killer be considered a 'great indie pop song'?

    Must be 92 so.

I did a tour with Madness around then and the Farm supported (and 808 State!)

There were never a bigger bunch of Lads who couldn't believe their luck!
Doesn't the drummer now write Coronation Street ?

As for a suggestion for a great "independant" pop song, search out We Aare All Bourgeois Now by a small band long defunct called McCarthy. The Smiths ain't got a patch on em.

    Here's the words :

    We Are All Bourgeois Now

    There's something wrong somewhere here
    So through unclean streets
    I made my way

    With holes in my shoes
And my children asleep at my feet
    I paid my way

In every town on the way
    The people looked grey
    The buildings looked healthy

But one day I met a man
    With money to spare
He said he would tell me how it is

    "The State," he began
"Has been propping up people too long
    For far too long

We all got lazy and couldn't be bothered
To make our way through the world

But we are all bourgeois now
    Once there was class war
    But not any longer
Because baby we are all bourgeois now
So go out and make your way in the world

    We're free to choose
    We're all free to choose
    We're all free to choose
    We're free to choose

In booming Britain we all work together
To raise ourselves in the world
    Each of us knows someone
Who has done well for themselves
    So well for themselves"

"Thank you" I said as I left
    "I'll be on my way
    I see how it is"

    We are all bourgeois now
And somehow I'll raise myself in the world

    I'm free to choose
    We're all free to choose
    We're all free to choose
    I'm free to choose

    We're all bourgeois now
    We're all bourgeois now
    We're bourgeois now

Cheers Alan Dunne. McCarthy had a very indie pop sound. Stereolab were exceptionally poppy - as were Lush. Dreamy, spaced-out pop ftw...
