Hi you should have a little search of the forum as this has been asked quite a number of times, good choice to take it up though! stick at it and you will reap the rewards!

Id say start off with an acoustic. much better sound and you wont have to spend a fortune on an amp too.

check out this website for cheap guitars and the likes

If the (wo)man wants to play electric, there's no reason (s)he shouldn't start on an electric.

im not sayin they shouldnt, i just found it easier to learn on an acoustic, as electric is far easier to manage then. if you can play acoustic, then you will find an electric great to handle. its only a suggestion :)

There's a few questions you should ask/answer first that may help you:
Why do you want to play ?
What do you listen to ? (this will more than likely influence your choice of guitar and what you learn to play)
    What's your budget?
Have you any friends that you can get to show you some bits and pieces ?

I find it's perhaps not always a great idea/investment to buy a guitar if you can't even play a chord.

The "get an acoustic first" opinion is often misleading. In theory it works fine , in practical terms it usually mean some people never get past the 5main open chords. Basically learning on an acoustic is harder which , agian in theory, "makes you a better player"

    Personally I disagree :)
And I started on an acoustic.

    Wow

    Thanks everyone
Ok I seem to have started quite an acoustic/electric debate so i'll try answering the above questions

Im not too concerned bout what i play i enjoy classic rock/metal
judas priest iron maiden dio megadeth sorta stuff thats kinda why i thought electric

Dont really want to spend much more than 150- thats why i thought the ebay one looked good value

i have a mate who plays a small bit but by his own admission is crap-so that rules out friend helping

Must admit i'm leaning to the ebay one

    Thanks again guys

An acoustic guitar isn't really going to help you play classic rock/metal to be honest.

I think a pack like this would be better than that eBay yoke:

    Get a Yamaha Pacifica

They are just awesome guitars for the money and hot enough to handle Priest/Metallica etc

They are cheap here and I think there are different colours as well

Is there much of a difference between the pacifica 012 and the 112. Is it worth it to spend the extra fifty quid. Would a noob notice any real difference.

When I started I asked someone the dreaded "beginers guitar" question.
He then said , "well, you've to figure out if you're a Les Paul player or a Strat player"

I got aStrat cause Jimi did . couldn't play for 2years, bought a les paul and thought "Finally, I can f=ucking play a lick or two!!"

    Good point

I dont think a noob would notice the diff. Although if there is a spare 50 quid knocking around definately go for the 112v. The bridge bucker in it is surprisingly hot and the trems are so good for the odds.

I bought my nephew one last xmas and every time I am over there I can thelp but jam on it. Lovely neck as well.

Honestly for the odds I just cant fault it.

Lesters are hotter alright. I would recommend the chap to see what shape he is into and go to a guitar store and at least see how the neck feels and the weight suits etc

Some lesters have chunky ol necks and alot of weight and that can be off putting to a beginner.

Pfft, puffs! A Les Paul is a real mans guitar.
