Has the Law Society finally woken up

I see on the paper and the news today that the law society have advertised a postion looking for someone to help with all the newly qualified and longer qualified solicitors who have been let go to give them advice, etc.

That took them a long time. For the past year everyone bar the Law Society knew that there were loads qualifying but being let go but the Law Society didnt do anything to help.

My question is this, is this concern now motivated by the anger that is out there or is it to do with the fact that they will be losing money this September with less then the last couple of years recruits into blackhall and those doing exams, so they have to look like they are doing something?. In my view, its the latter. This view is down to the fact that the 2nd year of college has seen its time reduced by 3 weeks but the fees increased.

Would love to know people's view on this.

The vision of the little dutch boy sticking his finger in the damn springs to mind......

As a result of the shortening of the PPCII course as you mentioned - surely it is impossible to justify charging the enormous fees which are now payable for it. At 4800 euro for a 6 week course - That's 800 per week...... I would love to see a detailed breakdown of the basis for charging these fees.

My personal favourite ripoff is the 920 euro application fee for the PPCI. It says in bold; This does not form part of the fees for the course. Heaven forbid anyone thought a grand application fee could be subtracted from the 8k actual fee.

I said on another thread that the head of the law society was on the radio today and said that 1637 people sat the fe1s in october and there are 1300 trainees in the qualification process at the mo. Crazy numbers which the law society did nothing to control.

Just for fun, say each of those that sat the fe1s did 4 subjects at 105 euro a pop = 690,000 euro. I'd say (hasten to ad I have no factual basis for this) that the true figure is much higher when you count people who sit more than 4 and then the 110 euro rechecks.

If they get anything around that with two sittings a year no wonder they didn't think ahead. They are useless!!!

I think its a cynical move. All those disappointed young solicitors and their irate parents ringing up saying "I paid the fees, where the job?". Guess which newbie will have to field all those irate phone calls?:p

Wouldnt surprise me that when this person is employed and if you want to meet this person, you will have to pay for the privilege, thats after all the money one has given to the Law Society to become a solicitor with now no job at the end of it.
