Apply the front and rear brakes firmly.

Either that, or the only other solution is to get a fixie.

Is it the exact same noise you get when you rotate the pedals backwards with the bike stopped?

A friend of mine has a freewheel on a bike and it's silent. I'll as him the next time I see him.

    +1 on the fixie idea.

The noise is the ratchet which allows the bike to freewheel. In other words, it's meant to click. You can always open up the freehub and grease up the mechanism, which will quieten down for a while, but if you don't know how to do that, I'd leave well enough alone.

FIRST OF ALL: (before I get slagged!): I know all about this noise and why its there, I've worked in bike shops!

Is it just me or do higher end wheels make a louder click? I've seen guys with expensive carbon mavics's and zipp's which make a really loud click when freewheeling! The best example was my friends carbon disc tt wheel...it was so loud!

Anyway, is it because these wheels are made for people who pedal the whole time and don't freewheel? I doubt it! Or is it that they are lacking a bit of grease in the hub? I also doubt it!!

Basically, what I am saying is why is it louder in some wheels than others?

yeah I noticed that too, the better the wheel the louder it is...maybe its a bit like cars (the 'look at me' factor to draw attention..:D) but I do actually think it does have something to do with less grease like you mentioned...as the top end wheels are more weight weenie focused so saving 30-50g of grease is a big deal in their marketing hype about weight!

Ive heard of a few guys re-greasing their freewheels and hubs (FnB) after they buy higher end wheels as manufac are skimpy with amount of grease they put in them..
