    Hi Lads,
I'm having problems connecting to LANs at the moment (Well I don't really know how long for). Connecting using DHCP it's selecting 169.....

If I manually put in an IP it's not connecting either, it does recognise if I put in a conflicting IP though it does tell me it's conflicting?

By the way when I say connecting I mean it's not pinging other IPs and it's not connecting to the web!

Thanks for any help you can give me!
    //Gary

What do you mean by connecting to LANs ? Are you trying to connect to a Windows network, the Internet, a NAS ? Does the network you're trying to connect to have a DHCP server to provide i.p. information ? Is it properly configured ? When you enter the fixed i.p. are you also entering an address for a gateway (usually the modem or router in a home network) or a DNS server ? Are you using a known good CAT5E cable ? Is your Mac set to use the Ethernet port ? I use the Locations function to configure my MBP for different circumstances, e.g. Wired, Wireless, 3G, etc. Have you used this system ?

I knew I needed more information I just didn't know what:

What do you mean by connecting to LANs ? Are you trying to connect to a Windows network, the Internet, a NAS ?

Trying to connect to the internet through a windows network

Does the network you're trying to connect to have a DHCP server to provide i.p. information ?

I don't think it has a DHCP server, it is more of a peer to peer network with a connection to the web

    Is it properly configured ?

I think so it works for windows machines no problem and the guy said it worked for another mac??

When you enter the fixed i.p. are you also entering an address for a gateway (usually the modem or router in a home network) or a DNS server ?

No I'm not entering this, the 255.255.0.0 comes up automatically thgouh

Are you using a known good CAT5E cable ?

    Yes tested with other laps

Is your Mac set to use the Ethernet port ?

Ya went into system prefs and it's in green etc.

I use the Locations function to configure my MBP for different circumstances, e.g. Wired, Wireless, 3G, etc. Have you used this system ?

I do have a 3G card that I'm using at the minute but didn't think this would affect the ethernet??

Well thats no good. your gonna need a default gateway. but this could be anything. go to a working windows machine and run CMD. type ipconfig. Get the info from here and copy it into the mac. should be fine

Sometimes the network location can get corrupt, preventing access to network services, in System Preferences go to Network, Location, edit locations, and create a new location, called auto, apply and see how that goes. Also networking is heavily dependent on DNS, make sure that you have the proper DNS entries in the Network System Preference,
