When I was younger I was always a fan of hip-hop, but mainly mainstream, wasn't even familiar with the Wu-Tang Clan... (I am trying to remember who I was into, can't really remember it was ten years ago when I was first big into rap.) Then I became an angsty teenager and Nirvana and Grunge and then Punk became my main staple. When I got to college Blues and 60-70s rock was the music I listen to most, but I also kept a few select tracks on my MP3 player.
Then I watched the Whackness back in october and my i got back into hip-hop in a big way (much bigger than before, its all i listen to now.)

How did you get into hip-hop?

Mr. Shakur all the way. Started off with his greatest hits and never looked back. Prefer East coast raw stuff now but I still listen to Pac's best stuff too.

Same here man. I was at a house party having a few smokes (had just started that as well :D) and heard "Brendas got a baby" followed by "Me Against the world" and that was me started on the hip hop path. Got a lend of the Greatest Hits and I was hooked. Have collected all of Pacs tunes over the years since, including the rarities and OG mixes.

He is the best rapper that was, and the best rapper that ever will be IMO.

Started by getting tapes from one of the lads in the mid to late 80's the likes of jazzy jeff and the fresh prince - He's the DJ im the rapper,PE bum rush the show,BDP criminal minded etc etc..

Progressed then to buying vinyl around 89/90 and onto DJing in 92 still at it to this day.

my first album was pac greatest hits....2nd album was jay z life and times of shaun carter which was a big thing for me as my mates ripped me out of it for buying an east coast album as back then they wer strictly west coast fans haha. i was always the rebel listening to jayz or nas, wu tang etc while they was still stuck on warren g, snoop and pac. but i grew to hate wat hip hop became its sad to say but i fell out of love with it. but i listened to illmatic the other week for the first timein couple of months its just brings back great memories and shows me why i love hip hop. i only listen to old **** now days though like slick rick, kool g rap, early nas, jay z, biggie, pac and wu and wu solo albums coz love the raw sounds ya know

I started getting into music in 1991/1992 (was 13/14). I would watch "Yo MTV Raps" on Saturday mornings on MTV. I loved listening to scratching on songs.

The Prodigy and the Rave scene was all the rage in 1991-1994 but my order of groups came like this up to 1995:

    1. House of Pain
    2. Cypress Hill
    3. Snoop Dogg
    4. Dr Dre
    5. Ice Cube
    6. Da Dogg Pound
    7. Ice Tea

In school around this time 95/96, it was all about Blur v. Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and TBH I never got into that.

Then in 1995, I discovered Black Sabbath and Rage Against The Machine, Sepultura and few obscure speed metal bands like Nuclear Assault.

Then in 1997, two double albums came out around the same time Wu Tang Clan (Wu TangForever) and Notoriuous BIG (Life after Death). So then I discovered the Wu Tang Clan (and never looked back), Nas, Pete Rock, Rakin & Eric B..

With the last 10 years I've listened to just about anything..

I went through the phase where I thought Tupac was the greatest musician in the world as well. Got/heard "Strictly 4 my Niggaz" when I was around 14, which was odd because it had been out ages. Anyway that was my first hip-hop album. Listened to loads of ****e for years after while throwing Pac in the CD player the odd time.

Happened up the Slim Shady LP one time, started listening to rap a bit more. Got Dre's stuff. From there I got NWA's stuff, Nas, Onyx, Wu-tang Clan, Slick Rick. Then Outkast came with ATLiens. Then I heard MJEX's What's Confusing You? when back through the Irish scene, Scarey Eire a bit of Rob Kelly, some Urban Intellgience. From MJEX I went to more obscure underground stuff, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, Prolyphic, El-P, Apathy. Grew out of the Irish phase around 19, except for MJEX who I still listen to regularly. Started listening to more radio friendly hip-hip (that still doesn't get radio play) Atmosphere and the likes...

Lately I've been into the likes of Shad K, POS, Sims, Witness, K'naan, MJEX's new stuff - I've actually gone back and started to listen to the Scareys again too. Whatever pops up on the iPod playlist really.

    So here's my story.....

I think the start for me was when i heard Naughty By Nature's OPP, although i had no clue about what they where talking about (i do now :D) it somehow drew me in). I was a huge Guns N Roses, Michael Jackson and Kim Wilde fan at the time.

The next major milestone was when my brother gave me a tape that someone had given him, it was Easy E's "Eazy Duz It". I couldnt stop listening to it, probably alot to do with the bad language but i also started listening to the stories that Eazy was rapping about and got into it and learning all the lyrics. Still loves this album til this day.

Then started acquiring tapes from friends like Ice Cube, Ice T, Dre, Snoop etc. and really started getting big into hip hop.

First tapes i bought where NWA "Straight Out of Compton" and Outkast "Southernplayalistcadilacmusic". Actually quite a funny story, i listened to the NWA tape with my mother in the car for the first time. She was horrified.

Then when CD's started getting popular (jesus i'm old) the first CD's i bought where Tim Dog "Do Or Die", Ice Cube "Bootlegs and B-Sides" and a 2Pac album (cant remember which one).

First vinyl i bought was 2Pac California Love and Sir Mix a Lot Baby Got Back.

Haven't stopped listening to hip hop since then but have broadened my musical taste in recent years, bits and pieces of rock, funk, soul, drum n bass have started to appear in my collection.

As said already, I started out with 2pac like lots of us. I went on to buy all him albums, including the post-death ones. I wouldn't listen to any east coast at the start as I was immature and took everything the great man said as gospel! I started listening to N.W.A., built up my collection from the G-funk era; Chronic, Doggystyle, Regulate etc. I loved Ice-T then, and of course Ice Cube. Got all their stuff, then some Cypress Hill, and all Naughty by Nature, All Nas' stuff. Then I started to like the hard beats of the east coast. I got Enter the 36 Chambers, Wu-Tang Forever. Then started to Love Mobb Deep, CNN, Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, Afu-Ra, Royce Da 5'9". Never got the Jay-Z hype! Now I'm listening to stuff like People Under the Stairs, Gang Starr, Scarface (Love The Fix at the moment), Al Green, Smokey Robinson, lots of Motown! Still keep Pac bumpin though, don't think anyone can match his charisma.

    Great idea for a thread!

My introduction probably came through Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys. I'm not sure if this was because of how they toured or because they would have gotten air-time on rock stations back then. Have to think about that.

    Eminem. :o

Got into Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg/NWA/Ice Cube through him and it took off from there.

OutKast and Nas are my favourites currently but also really enjoy Notorious, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Jurassic 5 and Wu Tang.
