I suppose it's the first thing we are all going to think.

I initially feared it was from a crash. (There was at least one fairly hairy-looking spill in yesterday's stage.) Do pro-cyclists ever actually die as a result of crashing in a race?

Sometimes yes, but I don't recall any case of someone dying suddenly after a crash.

    From the Herald Sun
The last time a cyclist died in his sleep during a race was in 2003 when Frenchman Fabrice Salanson, 23, died in similar circumstances at the Tour of Germany.

What I mean to say is I don't recall someone dying unexpectedtly in their sleep like that because of crash injuries.

no - tends to be self-inflicted gloopy blood

Davy McCall was killed when hit by a car in a club race (not going to elaborate on the details) it was very tragic and he was a class act even as a vet.
This young lad Frederiek Nolf had a girlfriend, mother and father as well as a circle of friends. People do die in their sleep often for no particular reason and my only thoughts are for his family and friends.

    That's awful.

In fairness we've all got a right to be cynical after years of doping scandals, but I don't think its right to comment while the guy is dead for barely 24 hours.

Sudden Death Syndrome is a well documented, poorly understood affliction, mainly in young athletes, we've seen GAA players in Ireland taken by it too, so I'm disappointed with many initial responses in this forum - we can leave those debates for another day.

    May he Rest In Peace

Very sad news. Frederick finished 48th in the Tour of Ireland 2008. I was talking to him after the stage in cork. Nick guy and a big loss to our sport.
    Rest in peace.
