This morning, there was a bus with it's roof torn off in North Strand . There were a lot of Gardai around and they were directing traffic away from the scene

    Anyone know what happened?

Saw it. A tree fell on the bus and the fire brigade had to cut roof off

Newstalk news said there were no passengers onboard and the driver was ok. They got it wrong it seems.

It seems like no-one got hurt, which is good.
On the plus-side, it looks like DB have got themselves a new tourist bus there! :D

    LOL!!!

Or they could put a soft top on it and have Dublin's first convertible bus. Could be useful for those hot summers we're used to.

similar thing happened in Bray a few years ago - driver drove under a low bridge thinking he was in a single-decker. He wasn't...

I think they are designed to peel off easily in the event of a strike from a large object such as a bridge. In this case it hit the tree and feeled off

Have a look at the attached

Does anyone know what really happened? Gardai and Dublin Bus keep saying a razor sharp tree fell on it and tore the roof off. Anyone see the fire brigade cutting off the roof? Got pics?

Wouldnt it be covered under insurance?

 Are the passengers' heads supposed to peel off with it?

    Not necessarily.

Whenever this has happened before the buses have been repaired.

In case anyone here hasn't seen it yet, a bus apparently hit a tree in the North Strand area of Dublin this morning. I put up a few pics of it here and here in a thread in the photography forum.

I'm posting here because it seems like the entire roof came off in one piece, almost as if by design. The windows on the left hand side (the side that the tree is on) don't even look like they've bee smashed/broken. Just wondering if anyone here knows what the story is in relation to this. Is it a safety feature to stop passengers being caught up in the snarled metal if the bus hits a bridge or something?

I was just wondering cause it seems to have happened all to easily. Thought somebody here might know and didn't want to start a discussion on it in the Photo. forum.

I'm pretty sure reports now say the fire brigade cut off the roof when it was damaged?

EDIT - actually, just checked and there's a few different scenrios still doing the rounds.... one with one passenger upstairs, and the other with none!

this is excellent forward planning by DB...when the need for a tree-lopper vehicle becomes apparent their bus transformed itself automatically into the ideal vehicle to deal with the overhanging branch. Well done DB planners!

Just heard report on radio about the government trying to encourage use of public transport, the roof coming off a bus is a great way to encourage people alright! :D

CIÉ self-insure up to a certain limit.

IIRC it used to be £1,000,000

if anyone was wondering it means they get cheaper insurance because there they have a large excess on any claim they make. They have their own insurance people to deal with smaller claims.

They say there was nobody on it but in the photo you make out that the DMD is set on an actual route number, not 'As Seirbhis'.

On that note, they do actually have an open top bus (possibly more than one) for that purpose. I've seen it coming out of Phibsorough garage once or twice

yeh there were 10 people on it, all downstairs according to DB

Apparently the CCTV shows a car cutting in front of the bus, forcing the bus driver to the left and into the tree. Also, the roof came off in the collision, it was not cut off later.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Serious that a tree was allowed to grow out so dangerously accross the road though, or did the bus mount the verge?

Don't think it mounted the path, just went over to the far left. From the pics the tree does look to be overhanging the road a bit.

They are definately designed to do that - notice how every single photo of a post bridge-strike Alexander Dennis bus has the roof lying on the ground after? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7077725.stm is the same as our EV class here; and there are photos of it happening to DB buses.

I would seriously doubt the fire brigade had any cutting to do at all.

Your right, they didn't. To cut the roof off an upright double decker would be a major operation, involving a crane and lots of other equipment.
You can tell from the pictures of the rear bulkhead bent back on itself that the roof peeled off.

Seeing a new bus (erm, EV class?) on the roads today with its branch-bars on it - was wondering if these would have had any affect in preventing this happening? They can presumably be retrofitted to the AV/AX ones like the one in this incident.

    Few more....

    72119.jpg

Looking at the size of that tree, and where the bus hit it (the stripped bark), I'd say it would have taken a bit more than the new branch-deflectors to save the roof.

Forward firing heavy machine guns and rocket launcher would probably have done the trick!:D

If it had been one of these it would have survived and have ripped the tree from its roots. :D

That very bus is still knocking around; I seriously doubt the owner would let you test it against that tree though!

No, thats just the free discription check, I'm sure if I shelled out and paid for a full check they'd say it's been scrapped. Unless it's being preserved, but what are the chances.

Oops, misread your other post. Nice pics, it looks like it's been restored to a time before the first pic, different CIE logo and numberboard and foglight. Nice find.

Heard the same about the car cutting in front from a person at DB, he said the roof was cut off though, although it was partially removed by the tree. I think it was an active bus but there was nobody upstairs.
