Stressed out due to shortage of jobs

    Hey there,

I'm a 21 year old male student in first year in UCD and I'm really stressed out due to the total lack of part-time pleb jobs! My parents won't support me because they have their own finances to worry about and I've been trying and trying since September to get something and still nothing! I mean I have some savings but they will eventually run dry and I don't even spend much in a week. €40 at most. My dad keeps annoying me by asking me when I'm gonna get a job and I lost the head at him the other day because he is being so inconsiderate. This country is a joke and now with the plans to introduce thirst level fees, I really don't know what I'll do! :(

While not the answer to your problem by any means but, the reintroduction of fees next year wouldnt apply to you as you have already started your studies on a free fees basis and have a legitimate expectation to complete them on that basis. Fees (tuition fees that is) can only be introduced for 1st years.

I totally know where you are coming from...

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about the economy, your parents should be more considerate. We all know that the economy is at a downturn.

Try not to stress too much about it, there are many people in your shoes. Do you have friends, hang out with them... A few pints a week would not break the bank, go for walks, go to the gym it would keep your mind off things for now.

Are you sure your CV is up to scratch? Not trying to smart, but practically every single shop in town hired Christmas staff, so if you couldn't get anything before Christmas, it may be something to do with your CV, or appearance when handing it in or something like that.

As long as you have that sorted, with a decent cover letter and you are actively trying to get work - emailing out CVs to shops, dropping in to them etc, then you and your parents can rest assured that you are doing your best!

Oh really? I didn't actually know that! Thanx. ;)

I beg to differ, there are many people looking for jobs. Managers were told to watch their finances... I was out there job hunting, i have 2/3 yrs retail experience. My retail was up to scratch, and well written if i may say so myself but there were no jobs!

Yeah well I only really go on a night out to a club once a week average and would only spend about €20 as I don't like getting too drunk when in town. Yeah I have many friends in college and outside and meet up with them often but it's just the financial situation you know... If things get worse I'll have to ask my parents even if it were only a few quid a week, I'd be fine.

Yeah i agree. Like I live right next to Dundrum and had been working there for the previous year full-time and had left in the summer because I went travelling before starting college. Dundrum were hiring for christmas staff in fecking September I was in that huge queue which extended to the other side of the mall! Madness!

Yeah you're right well I won't ask them for the time being but if things start getting sticky, I will have no other option! I suppose I could pay them back when I've finished my degree and have a job! lol :D

    Great thinking!;)

I am trying to cajole the folks into paying for a Smurfit masters-wish me goodluck!:pac:

I promise to pay them after my masters;) I would even sign a contract:D

Don't worry, you would be fine.... Life is a bitch right now with the bloody recession, everyone's talking about it so much now.
Once a week, spend a few hours devoted to job hunting and if you don't hang in there until you are flat out then ask the folks...

    Hey all,

thanks for all your advice and everything. I really appreciate it. I'm pleased to announce that I was offered a small part-time position in H&M today. The manager rang me up and offered me an eight-hour contract. I know it's not too much but it'll keep me going you know and besides I'm not a heavy spender! ;) Luck comes when you least expect it! :)

    Regards ;)

Always nice when you ask something of the universe and it sorts it out for you.

Yep. My old drama teacher had a lovely saying which was "Let the universe provide". :)

If you're only spending 40 a week, then 8 hours would cover that no problem! You would even be able to add to your savings:)

Yeah I know! ;) Sure the manager said that I will be asked to work extra hours when needed and I'm gonna try to work Sundays and get time and a half! ;)

It may sound trite, but a positive attitude brings its own rewards. Good luck with the job and the studies.

Congratulations on getting the job OP. On the positive side, at least you live at home and can live on €40.

I'm still paying my loans for college (rent, reg fees, books, course fees for my postgrad etc.) and it really sucks - even with having worked through college, so I can appreciate how frustrating it must have been not having money.

Yeah true and I'm studying languages and there are dozens of jobs out there for language consultants for companies and stuff. So I shouldn't encounter much difficulty getting a job when finished my studies. Also another positive note, I get a 25% discount in H&M! ;) Although everyone keeps asking me to give them a discount haha...

Yeah my aunt who was a mature student for years was constantly in debt. she actually got a good job when finished collge and managed to pay it off! Still there is little supposrt for many students in this country. In Sweden for example students actually get a small allowance every week and grands are much more accessible to most people. then again, people pay much higher tax there!

Yeah I sincerly agree with you on that one. I suppose it's because I believe in karma. But negativity gets you nowhere tbh.

Why not provide a service to someone? Knock around some doors, ask if they need windows cleaned, grass cut etc
Also when i was in college i noticed that some people were offering massages for a fee and were posting flyers on the student notice boards, why not try something similar?
