Head Gasket Mini Cooper 2003

My girlfriend car had been overheating over the past few days. She brought it to a local mechanic today (as it needed a service anyway) . He said that he thinks the head gasket is gone. He said he never fixed the head gasket on a mini cooper, so advised her to go elsewhere. He said he wouldn't expect it to cost more than €800.

In the mean time i rang a main bmw garage to see the cost of fixing the problem and they said it could cost up to €2000.

I know its a labour intensive job and there could be all sorts of problems when you remove the head etc, but i was just wondering if anybody has had a similar problem and how much did it cost to fix.

    Cheers.

Done one before where it was overheating (04 cooper). One garage diagnosed a head gasket but it turned out to be just the thermostat.

I think the part (thermostat) was €150 as it was a large unit, few litres of coolant and then add 1.5-2hrs labour for diagnosing/repairing the fault.

But get it to someone who has the knowledge (www.accarsales.ie) of these.
