lads what are the odds of a head gasket going on a 2002 A4 with 87k (miles) on the clock. The car is consuming 1 litre of oil every 2 weeks ,but there is no white scum on the cap.I have brought it to a mechanic today and he said the gasket is gone.I have talked to other people who said that is a very rare occurance on an A4 of that age.Do I need to get a second opinion?could it be an oil leak

Havent heard anything about those having a problem. In fact, that engine is far from a new design and should be tried and tested at this stage. Its an odd one alright. Did it over heat or anything lately? Do you drive the nuts off it? or maybe buy it off a granny who barely drove it?

Is oil mixing with the water, Is the exhaust smoky?

Kind of sounds like piston rings are shot, maybe valve stem oil seals but if its either of these you would geta blue smoky exhaust.

Ah maybe he means just the rocker cover (cambox cover) gasket is shot. In that case it should not be expensive AFAIK

    How much do you reckon?

The oil has to go somewhere, I'm assuming you are putting 0.5/1ltr in every 2 weeks, the oil can only go 3 places, 1. into coolant 2.outside engine (at this rate you should have puddle on drive/undertray) 3.out the exhaust pipe. My money is on 3, give the car few heavy revs while stationery and watch the exhaust my money is on there being plumes of smoke coming out, btw the only one of three that can be repaired in 2hrs is no2 (seal, gasket etc) otherwise its going to be expensive territory.

Thanks for that ,sounds like number two ,just had a good look myself and oil is leaking out at the top end of the engine and burning off on a big copper pipe underneath
