Hi all, I just bought a Canon 40D and am looking for a reasonable priced tele lens. My limit is about 600e and I'm willing to buy second hand.

    Any suggestions or ideas?

Theres a few 70-200 f/2.8 for 850,on here and photography ireland,
But it depends what you want?
    A super zoom,the sigma 50-500,
A standard zoom 75-300 IS USM
Or the great IQ 70-200 f/2.8 L(Abit over your budget)

Probably the best in class for that price range, maybe a little more, is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L.

Ive found one on pixmania that got a good write up on dpreview. It would do all ranges and save me changing lenses full stop. (within reason)

    Heres the links:

From what I can see, it looks like a good lens, well rounded, versatile good price.

    What are your opinions?

One of the problems with superwide to superzoom is usually at either end the quality can be crap. You have the wide angle taken care of with the kit lense.

Can someone please explain the difference in these lenses to me? I have seen the f/4L version for 585 second hand or 617 brand new from pixmania.

Opinions on this particular lens and any other words of wisdom?

The f/4 model has IS(image stabaliation)Some swear by it other see it as pointless,It's an f/4 lens so will give you slightly slower shutter speeds in low light but now by much

The other is an f/2.8 which means DOF will be better(less "busy" background) and will give you slighly quicker shutter speeds at night,The f/2.8 would be a better lens as it is used by sports/press photographers which shows it is good quality

    Thanks for that Ricky.

I might well get the F4 with IS second hand for 585. I have never done zoom photography at night. Just landscapes. Any zooming would be during the day.

The price difference new with / without IS is HUGE
