We’re looking for as many cyclists as possible to complete our online survey of views and opinions on power meters. Even if you don’t have a power meter we want you in the survey. It’s open to all cyclists, of any persuasion and any level, and everyone who completes the survey can enter a draw to win a pair of Detec carbon wheels. The survey runs until 1st March 2009. See www.brimbrothers.com/survey/

Ditto. an Irish cycling accessories company - possibly a first? certainly in this field anyway.

    Done already.

Really looking forward to seeing the finished product having heard a bit about it on Orwell spins.

Very cool -- an Irish power meter sounds very interesting.

Measuring the force applied to the pedal sounds like an interesting approach. I would love to get a power meter but they are so damn expensive!

Done and done - great to see a new Irish venture like this

done and the wheels are mine. they will go great on my commuter with mirrors panniers saddle bag, mtb handle bars and other such dangling accoutrements, the zipps need replacing,

Oh God, NNNNNoooooooooo, not another one.....

I count that as a callous act of terrorism against cycling. I'll get Jack Bauer after you.

There's still time to take it back.

I don't want to have to get Jack but I'll do it, just see if I don't.

Not a unique idea, was around a few years ago no? Could be the same company maybe.

They aren't the same company- the previous guys who tried it never made it to market.

Assuming then that it was already patented by someone else? Have the bought the patent from them?

Done, not that the wheels tempted me or anything...I just like filling out surveys ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

I don't know, I'm just going on what they have on their website. A patent covers a specific implementation, not a general idea, so they may have a different way of doing it.

    Missed that. Cheers

"Other issues listed are lack of wheel choice (Powertap), incompatibility with Shimano or Campagnolo cranks (Quarq), difficulty in setting up (Polar), and can’t be used indoors (iBike)."

No mention of SRM - my PM is perfect :)

Can only use it on one bike. Can't use it with Campag cranks.

You do have to take off the cranks though, don't you?

So whats the ideal power meter from our perspective then?

I have never used one but was considering getting one for interest sake. So far the best I think for me would be the powertap as it has the ability to swap between bikes easily and also between shim and campag. I line the ANT+ and the ability to use witha Garmin 705 which if I bought one would be a must because even though I don't have a 705 the though of adding more than one computer to my bike disgusts me.

    Freewheel?

    Multiple wheelsets?

I don't think Powertap is that easily swappable between Shimano and Campagnolo, e.g. you have to choose which freehub you want when you buy the thing. You can however get a conversion cassette, e.g. a cassette with Shimano spacing that fits on a Campagnolo freehub, or the other way around.

I'd love a power meter, but I just think they are too damn expensive for me right now. Ideally I want something that hooks in with my Garmin Edge 705 and which can easily be moved between two bikes (both Shimano).

I'm thinking about renting one, just to see what my numbers are.

    Just get a lab test?

I was thinking about what I'm putting out on climbs. Would a lab test simulate that?

Well it could tell you want you *can* put out on hills.

Just to clarify things, Brim Brothers is a brand new independent privately owned company with no connection to any previous or existing company. Our patents are our own original technology, not connected to (or even similar to) those of any other company.

We're just two engineers who've been mulling over power meter design for the last 3 or 4 years, came up with some unique ideas, and finally decided to do something about it.

You don't need to do a lab test to see what your numbers are. There is a test you can do on a home trainer....

My turbo (Tacx Flow) has a power setting which lets me set the power and pedal to that power. Taking a MAP (RAMP) test with power will give you a fair idea of what you can do.

I do however love the idea of getting a power meter to use for a month or two to help me out training. I was watching 'Overcoming' and enjoyed the bit where Sastre was told to keep his power 450 (or 400). I'd love to go for a week in the Alps with apower meter

I think it was Basso could push 450 but Sastre 400. Pretty impressive figures. Having a power meter is a good tool to train with. There's no hiding.

Aye, i do alot of turbo testing and field testing but at the end of the day they don't tell you have as much as a lab test.

Was thinking about this approach to PMs yesterday on a ride. Very curious as to how the technology will work. More specifically how will it measure the power on the up stroke the "unweighting" phase of the stroke.

My thought was that your suppose to still apply pressure on the 'up' stroke. Different muscles do the job but its still a contribution. There are even special cranks that train those muscles. http://www.powercranks.com/ look cool but I can imagine very painful.

yes but the pressure applied isn't a downwards pressure.

The powercranks are cack. Ridiculous claims by the inventor.

A reminder to those who haven't yet completed the power meter survey that it closes next weekend. You still have a chance to win those wheels, see www.brimbrothers.com/survey/
