New analogue channels, NTL Dublin?

Yesterday I had to tune analogue into a TV in Dublin. I found TVE, RAI Uno, rtl and CNN. Does anyone know how long they've been here? They're not on the digital packages anyway.

All the channels I found were quite high in the spectrum, all above 700Mhz IIRC.

    Can't get them here.
    You sure you've got NTL?

It's cable using co-axial, 90s apartment I'm staying in for a few weeks. Definitely NTL in the area and a cablelink box here. I assume it to be NTL. They were all up quite high but I am getting 19 - 20 channels on analogue.

What part of Dubin are you in? Are these channels on UHF?
Some areas can pick up UHF channels on cable with where the coax to the door is brand spanking new 2 way cable.

I believe only a very small part of the city was ever upgraded before the cash ran out and NTL went into Chapter 11.

Well it's all potentially 2 way really but I think the plan was to replace the whole network and have fibre to the curb. AFAIK, the current broadband system squeezes alot more out of the old system to get broadband working over longer distances.

The higher the frequency of channels, the higher the loss through coax. UHF (high frequency relative to majority of NTLs mainly VLF & VHF output) channels on NTL have always come through very poorly or not at all on any connections I've ever seen on the south side of the city.
Fibre to the curb, coax to the house means very low cable lengths allowing for very little signal loss.

Do NTL / UPC do any deals for high paying customers? These are all foreign channels and I'm in Ballsbridge (embassy belt) could it be some sort of deal with the area / embassies?

You might be onto something there!
It may be a special service considering the amount of foreign embassies in the area alright!

700mhz is the very leaky end of the spectrum on old Cablelink copper so it wouldn't get far.

I know less than 1KM from here there is definitely UPC broadband. I would say this is the more modern end of the network. The channels are pretty clear, I just don't know why they're there.
