Help with putting a value on my coin collection.

    Hello folks.
I have quite a decent collection of a few hundred coins or more, including a few notes. From the recent Sam Beckett coins to normal foreign coins and a few hundred in between. I've got a lot of very old Irish and English coins too. I have had this collection my whole life although I am no expert.
I am basically looking for someone who would be able to have a look at my collection and tell me what it might be worth. I do not want to sell the entire collection but if it turned out that I had an old coin or note worth a few hundred euro I would consider selling it.
I've always been nervous to trust anyone with them as I'd worry that they might slip a few into their pocket without me noticing as there are so many to keep track of. I can't go to a dealer as they might say a coin is worth €50 when it could be priceless, just because they want to get their hands on it... and I'd be none the wiser.
I don't think the worst of people and no offence to the dealers out there but I just feel like I have to be careful.
Any ideas on who could help me to value my collection?

    Many thanks,
    Rory,

You may want to have them looked at by a reputable dealer.

If the dealer says a particular coin is worth x amount I would verify this from other sources (online auctions and so on) before parting with it. I think you are right to be wary. If you do not know the coins approximate (even ballpark) value then you should definitely get a 2nd opinion on any valutation you recieve.

    Thanks for the advice Morlar!
I will try to seek out some reputable dealers.... Anybody know some? I know the guy in George's St Arcade but I don't know if he's into looking at collections(without the guarantee of having the chance of buying some of the coins).
Anyone have anything to add to what Morlar has said?

I'm sure you can pick up a book which will value British and Irish coins based on quality. it would give you a general quide price. I remeber there was a little coin shop off O'Connell street used to sell them years ago although its probably long gone now.
Otherwise go to the coin show in the RDS and bring a sample of the coins you think are the most valuable plus uou can see the prices of similar coins they maybe selling

Thanks Silverharp. I used to buy the odd set in that shop. It was a newsagents near the Garden of Rememberance, but it had a modernising 3 or 4 years ago and no longer sells collectibles.
I will probably go to the coin fair, one of my uncle's friends is an organisor of the show AFAIK.
I have a few of those valuation books but they are from like 1977, so would prob be worth more than most of my coins at this stage!:D:D:D

Theres 2 guys in the Georges arcade, of those I would talk to Tony Schorman. There are some dealers I would avoid but I don't want to mention their names. Your best bet would be to go to the coin fair as suggested this month in the RDS. Go up to the Irish Numismatics Stand and talk to any of the guys manning that. They aren't dealers so they'll give you an honest opinion. I can value the Irish coins myself and I should be there most of the weekend, if you want send me a PM and I'll tell you how to find me at the fair.

Thanks very much Blade! I'll be there! Micheal (aka Eamonn) Kenny is a very good friend of my uncle's, I'm sure you must know him!?

Yeh he's the chairman of the numismatics society :)

He may not be there himself but theres usually a couple of others manning the stand and a few members always floating around. If you're selling, a dealer called Andrew Auld will always give you a fair price, that is if you have anything of value.
