How about Cuba( nice weather & cheap drinks also good healthcare system for all)are they affected by the global banking problems? ,given their ideology.

The whole world is affected by this. A country's citizens will get jobs before immigrants, unless you're in some kind of always in demand proffession.

If you are not in the car industry then it's not too bad where I am at the moment! Lots of companies still hiring.

This is a worldwide recession, although ours is going to the worst in the western world. We are going to reap what Fianna Fail have sown for many many years to come.

There are still opportunities abroad but you are going to have to work hard and there won't be family or friends to rely on at the start. If you are prepared to slog and chance your arm you'll get on anywhere.

If you want to live somewhere cheap for the year try Vietnam or Thailand.

my ex was from Hamburg, works in finance, and had to move to Dublin to get a job a few years ago! She's in Frankfurt now though, where the banks be at.

You can get your visa renewed easily enough in both. Think its a one month tourist visa initially. Of course you could try and get work teaching english.

Doesn't seem that bad over here, sounds to me like Ireland is one of the worst hit countries by this recession. The house of cards it was built on came tumbling down in some fashion.

so was the economy based on building houses then? How did they expect that to last?

I'll be emigrating to that happy parallel universe where no country has felt the effects of the 'cession.

Just applied for my visa for Oz today.

Do the exams in May, get a job to save for a couple of months and then I'm gone...

There'll be more Irish people applying for the jobs down here than for the ones at home though. It's like New York in the 1800s down here, boatloads of Paddys coming.

It's easier said than done, emigrating right now may not be the best. With the recession regardless of your skills you would always be considered a foreigner and so it would be difficult to obtain a work visa.

Only last night put my "plan B" into action... applied for a teaching job in Korea....

my plan "A" is a Masters....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,685 ✭✭✭Tom65

As someone said, the recession is worldwide, but Ireland is worst hit than pretty much anywhere than isn't Iceland.

Either way, I plan to finish my degree, do a Masters abroad, and then see where a job takes me.

Apart from the main economic attractions/climactic appeal of countries such as Oz or Norway, I'd be seriously considering capitalising on a niche market like say an Effigy Bazaar in the Middle East - I mean, there's always a demand for stuffed look-a-likes in that part of the world - They don't even have to resemble the person in question..once they burn and once they're cheap - how could one possibly fail?

Welcome to the 1980's kids...recession hasn't even begun to hit yet!

Wait for another year or two then you will really wonder why/how you spent so much money on expensive trainers and clothes you didn't need, crisps that tasted like poo, DVD's that you didn't even want, cans of red bull, €5 tracksuits that you paid €90 for cause it had a badge on it, 10min bus journeys, phone credit to ring that pizza place that was five minutes walk away...so on and so on.

Just wait till your Mums learn that dreaded word, "handmedowns"....yes your older brother/sister did wear these clothes before you:)

Kids who are between 10 and 20 are not going to know what the hell has hit them. Before the 1980s we had nothing anyway so a recession in a pretty poor society just means you have slightly less nothing than you used to have. Today however...we were the haves and soon we will be the have nots. That can be more difficult on our fat fingered generation.

You could emigrate or you could stay where you are from, relax and try to get this country back up on its feet again. Go outdoors more often in the sun/rain. Talk to random strangers. Take up a hobby. Recessions are brilliant for art and music. Humans need a recession every now and then, it helps keep us from getting too fat and stodgy. Most important though is to smile everyday to yourself and say, "It's only money":)

The price of a basic PC the 80ies was a £800+ in the early 80ies which was almost two months wages, laptops were even more expensive, now you can get a much more powerful one one for just $7. :P

Ya see now there's someone who has already caught on...ya gotta pull yourself out of recession with new ideas and as more people do likewise the country lifts itself out of recession with them.

I'll take a George Bush Snr, a George Bush Jnr, a Donald Rumsfeld and a Bertie Ahern.

Everywhere is hurting. Emmigration is futile at this point unless you are a specialist - in which case, depending on what you do and where you go, you will probably end up finding something. One of the best things you can do at the moment is try and convert your skills for use in critical functions - like healthcare.

Though im pretty sure I havent quite grasped just how severely Ireland is suffering from all of this versus everywhere else - I know you guys always relied on heavy EU funding..

Not sure healthcare is safe either. One of my friends just got laid off from that sector.

It depends on the area but the NIH just increased funding in a few areas so healthcare is stable right now.

I was a bit skeptical at first but now you guys have convinced me.
I am definitely moving to Ireland. (what can I say; I am a masochist)

Ever heard of the whole "History repeats itself" thing?
Ever notice how every "Global Recession/Depression" in history is always followed by a world war?
Remember Ireland’s involvement in the last world war?
Who do you think the major players will be in the next one?
East against the West? Muslims against Christians?
    Something to ponder.

How about everyone take a deep breath and stop feeding the fire?
(as I just did up above)
    There will always be jobs.
They might not be glamorous ones; or anything close to what you thought you would be doing.
But there will always be something.
Has anyone that’s been posting on here been laid-off yet?
Or are we all reading the papers and watching too much tv?
Did you know that studies have shown that people who don’t watch or read the news live happier, healthier and longer lives?
I guess that can be summarized under “ignorance is bliss” and although I am not an advocate of this mentality; maybe there is something there.

How about we start with something simple.. like
    Stop *****ing about everything?
    Work a bit harder?
    Stop living beyond our means?
    Support our locally owned businesses?
    ??
Who knows.. things might just get better.
(and NO.. I am not high)

Little over dramatic there... there's not going to be a world war.... maybe a civil war between the private and public sector!

    That was my point.
I was trying to be over dramatic.
I don't actually believe that there is going to be a world war.
But if we are going to freak-out about everything we see in the media.
Here is a couple of headlines from todays Independent.
Launch of Iran's satellite sparks new missile fear
North Korea prepares for long-range weapon test

    What world war where?

We are talking about Cuba right?
An island that gets hit by 8 hurricanes a year and gets leveled to the ground because those "dirt cheap" houses are made out of "dirt cheap" material?
Where are my cigars? Oh ****, where is my beautiful Cuban wife?
Oh no wait.. there she is.. working in that sugar cane field for two dollars per day.
    Wealth?

I jumped ship 18 months ago (today ;)) and moved to Munich. I had a feeling a sh!t storm was coming but didn't ignore it like everyone else.

I like Germany but taxes will kill you and its a bit of a culture shock when you compare it to Ireland. Every thing works like clock work here, it really annoyed me when I came at first but got used to it quickly.

The taxes are an eye opener, I would have an extra €1k in my pocket every month if I was on the same salary in Ireland! I'm not complaining, at least here in Germany I can see where the tax money goes, small price to pay for stabilty and efficiency. If only the Irish government were half as transparent and efficient.

Too many are making this into a private vs public argument. You got to look at it from the perspective of the public sector being a company and the boss (government) not having the funds to keep the business running. Just like any other company, cuts have to be made. The public sector should at least be thankful that there was not mass redundancies (yet), it hurts but they still have a job unlike many in other companies.
