Protest forces cancellation of Ahern speech
    Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:37
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had to cancel a lecture at NUI Galway last night after a protest by students resulted in scuffles with gardaí.

The protest had been organised by the student society, FEE, which disagrees with the reintroduction of third-level fees.

Mr Ahern was blocked from entering the college grounds and was booed and jostled by a group of about 20 protestors.

Mr Ahern was there to accept a presentation from the college's Literary and Debating Society.

Gardaí in Galway have confirmed that one man was arrested last night following a protest but was later released.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the incident.

Wasn't around myself when this happened but I have herd a bit about it. It's on the front page of the indo as well today. I personally have no respect for this man but this kind of thing is uncalled for!

im tryin to think this one through, but i seriously can't get my head around it. what good will this do? ahern has no role in irish politics anymore [gets my vote for smartest man in the country] and in my opinion is all this not just going to give unnessecary bad publicity for our very serious cause?

    1. There's no such thing as bad publicity.

    2. Ahern is merely representative of the endemic corruption, incompetence and greed that have plagued Irish politics for so long, and that have led to the current situation, whereby we have fees being threatened with being re-introduced. As a symbol of all that is wrong with Irish politics Ahern is still very much politically relevant. Hence the protest.
