Looking for some information re: Motor Tax.
I am after receiving a fine in the post for non Display off motor tax on the 1st of december. Its only a 60€ fine but the problem is the car was taxed. I had taxed in November and I forgot to put the tax disk in.
Will I still have to pay the fine or can I produce the notice and valid tax disk at a garda station and the matter will be dealt with??

    Any Info is appreciated.

You know you have already answered your own question.
The fine is for not displaying your tax disc, not for not having the car taxed.

Going to a station and showing the car was taxed wont change the fact that you didnt display the disc and thats what you were fined for.

I know I had a feeling that I would still have to pay it.
    Just needed to confirm it.

    Thanks

Do not pay it, tell them the tax disc was on the car. Send in a photocopy.

    Now we're talking!!
I was thinking of going in and showing them the disks.
It was probably a nubie on the beat and bit ticket happy.

Yeah you can try do that.
But you said yourself you just forgot to put the disc in the window, and then got fined for not having it in the window.

I see it that you made a mistake, got fined due to that mistake.
Personally i would suck it up and pay it and let it be a lesson learnt to put the disc in the window next time your renew it.

But i guess thats just me... :p

Ask them to provide proof of this i.e. in the form of a picture .. if they can't and you can prove it was taxed at that time then what can they do.

Just out of curiosity was the old tax disc on the windscreen on dec 1st?
Wondering if non display refers to no tax on show at all whether old or expired or non display of current disk?

    Havent a clue.
    presume it was a guard.
There was nothing on my window when I returned to the car. I only got the fine in the post yesterday and was told I had 14 days to pay it.

Think there is no harm in going over and having a word anyway.

There are two fines for motor tax afaik:

    1. Failure to have your motor vehicle taxed.
    2. Failure to display a current valid motor tax disc on the vehicle.

You most likely got done for the second offence.

Bad advice. You will only look stupid in court or at the station and will come across you are trying to bluff your way out of it.

Its non display of a current tax disc.

Its non display of a current tax disc.

What the point in Speed Cameras taking a picture then, he has a tax disc that was in force at the time.

Might be no harm to go over to the Garda station with proof that you'd paid your tax and ask politely if they can leave you off. Make sure you have proof that you paid the tax on time though. A current tax disc wouldn't be enough as you could simply have paid after you were caught and gotten a backdated disc. Most Gardaí will be happy with that, though I'm not sure if there's much they can actually do once the fine is sent out.

Think about this for a minute lads. The OP goes to court, says the disc was on the screen, the Garda says it wasn't. Surely you can figure out the rest?
