I assume the World Youth Champion, Ray Moylett, will be competing, and if so, he has to be a real threat!

He's a 60 kg man and isn't Hickey and Donovan the two main men there?

Hickey is the current champion I think!

Since Sutherland's departure, one would have to favor Darren O'Neill at Middleweight, assuming
    he is still making weight

Moylett has been entered so i reckon once his weight is ok he will compete. Altho as usual at this stage there is a hell of alot of enteriant that will not actualy weigh in come friday.

I hope the sucesses of olympics and world youths will rekindel peoples intrest in amature boxing and they get good crowds

I see Conor Aherne has not entered. I was talking to him a couple
of weeks ago and he wasn't sure if he would enter. He wasn't well and was
trying to shake off an illness!

A very good turn out in most weights!

Yeah if they all weigh in there will be some amount of bouts. Some blasts form the past to TERRY CARLYLE at 64 and there is an Alan Reynolds at 91...surely cant be THE Alan Reynolds think the last time i seen him he beat Ian Timms in the finals about 3-4 years ago

Hard to look past last years champions tho

Have to say i love this time of the year least i know were i will be for the next few weekends

No way, I missed Carlyle at 64 kgs. Lovely lad and a real warrior. Absolute dedicated. He has been off the scene for quite a while. He must be still dedicated to have entered. He was the closest in Ireland to have beaten Bernard Dunne. He went 11-11 and lost on a count back in the 2000 final at 57 kgs.

Times will not be confirmed until the final list of entries is known as the more bouts to be run the earlier it will start but it will be aroung 7-8 i would imagine. As for price i think it is aroung 10-15 euro for prelims rising up to around 20 euro for semi-finals and then for the final it depends were you sit like ring side was 50euro last year. If you plan on going to all the fight get a season ticket. It costs 100 euro but you get into every session including the finals for every amature boxing event held in the stadium

Thanks for the advice. It should be a good few weekends of boxing.

anyonegot a link to the draw?

Hopefully Darren O'Neill gets a title this year, if anyone deserves one, it's him.

I am looking forward to seeing Jamie Kavanagh. He did well last year, and is one to watch for sure.

I've seen him in the gym and in the ring and he looks to have a big future.

This is my favourite time of the year. Role on the weekend:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭duagre

Is there fights on Friday night or do they start on Saturday.

There is fights tonight. The weigh in is over and the draw is at 12. The program should be up on the iaba site after lunch

And I am betting it's not televised tonight?:(

Anyway, does the IABA still employ seeding?

As usual no TV coverage othere than the finals. No seedings its an open draw AFAIK

It's a disgrace. Though, RTE must have reasons; figures must not warrant coverage.

Soem folks don't know what they are missing!

    Is anyone going tonight?

Is Patrick Coyle a brother of Henrys?

Good luck to Alan Reynolds tonight - good to see him back. I'm like to see him turn pro if he does well.

Paddy Barnes earns his third Irish title after being given a W/O.

I assume Geraghty didnt make the weight! What was the story with Jimmy Moores non entry?

    results from last night.

Good win for Reynolds on his return!

Yeah Geraghty went in at fly AFAIK.

Not surprised Jimmy Moore didnt enter........last years final was a joke........the result was correct but he didnt score a point which was a disgrace

Was in there today.........some good contests...........young Kavanagh and Sutcliffe from the Crumlin were v.good.......pity they have to meet in the next round though........JJ Joyce very good also.

Carl Framton looked very very strong at feather.......would like to see him against DO Joyce........reckon it would be a corker.......fennessy looked very skillful also.

BTW the stadium are sellling season tickets for €100.........well worth it if anyone is interested in going to the stadium........sure from what I hear the finals are gonna be €50

yeah the Moore/Barnes final wa a joke last year. Fair enough Moore was soundly beaten but to not even score until the last round was poor. I think the towel was thrown in in disgust wasnt it.

100 euros for a season ticket is a frickin bargain - if I was livin in Dublin (or Ireland for that matter!) I would be havin a couple of those and bring a different mate all the time to introduce them to the sweet science.

Moylett it is. That should be a real chess match between
Donovan and Moylett; Donovan has been titleless for the past two
years, no win since 2006 I believe.

BTW, if Reynolds can win a 91 kg title it will
be a hell of an achievement

You sure about his name? His local paper seems to think its Moylette and RTE dont seem to be able to make up their mind!

I have a feelin its with the "e"

Bit like the fictitious Walshe. Folks add the 'e' without thinking and then
the name stands. This is actually how a lot of names become misspelled.

Anyway, enough of my 'preachings.' I suppose the best man to ask is Ray!:pac:

Some good bouts down for decision tonight and tomorrow. Looking forward to the fight between crumlin club mates jamie kavanagh v philip sutcliffe. Seen both last weekend sutcliffe has some power behind his punch and kavanagh seems a clever boxer IMOP its going to be a close one

Yeah that should be a cracker...........terrible pity they're the same weight.........they have met quite a few times down the years..........kavanagh is very slick and an excellent point scorer.........sutcliffe is very strong and has some lovely combo's.........am going mad i'll miss it tomorrow:mad: will be there tonight and am looking forward to Hickey v Bates......always serves up a triller and Con Sheehan v Jimmy Sweeney........sweeney was very impressive last week........also to see Conor Ahern, DO Joyce, JJJ, Roy Sheehan, Stephen O'Reilly & Ken Egan.........the 91+ is a local derby aswell so that should be interesting also.

Have been wondering about that too. I hope to god it's being shown.
It has been for several years now. I just hope the show a good
amount and I hope the 57 kg final is shown. That's the tasty one from the list IMO!

I'll do a bit of research and see what I can find. Maybe email the IABA&RTE!

"Meanwhile, David Joyce will meet his own brother Joe in the super heavyweight final after recording a 7-0 victory over Thomas Crampton. Joe Joyce beat Anthony Crampton, a brother of Thomas', in Friday's corresponding semi-final."

This is one for the stats men. I wonder has this ever happened in BOXING, let
    alone the Irish championships

Surely it should attract a decent bit of attention - Egan v McCarty alone should draw RTE's eye - if not then the gimmick of two brothers fight should.

Will they fight each other - I think I remember my two older brothers were drawn against each other in a Connaught underage bout and they flipped a coin and gave the other a WO

Rte have live coverage of the seniors from 9 - 11 on rte 2 next Friday night.

The 2 Joyce brothers won't be fighting apparently. They are going to decide a winner between themselves so it will be a walkover.

Ill make a diary date for that one.

REF the brothers, I never heard of two bros fighting. I have heard of brothers
scheduled to fight and the WO being used to decide

I remember the keating twins fought each other in the inters final in 2007 but i dont think it ever happened in the seniors.

Some good fights last weekend. Very dissapointed the kavanagh sutcliffe fight was stopped it was just getting going and the last round could have been a cracker the cut did not seem that bad but the lads safety is the most important thing. A sad way for a good young prospect to go out especially as he was 2 points up and looked fresh. Really looking forward to the egan McCarthy final

It is due to start at 7.45. The program wont run by weight as it normaly would. It is run in what ever order RTE want as to get the fights they want live between there coverage times

Full house I would imagine. Any finals I went to were full.
Door pay option would be available, unless the capacity is filled

I have'nt missed a finals night in years and it's been a long time since there's been a full house there. Probably the last real sell out was the night Henry Coyle beat James Moore.

Last year the place was about three quarters full I'd say. Hopefully after the Olympic successes this year will see a sellout.

Gone are the days when there was full houses. I haven't been in quite
a few years. I think Coyle won in 2003/2004 was it?

Yeah that was the 2003 seniors. It's a shame but lets be honest it's very rare now to see an amateur fight at senior level that truly excites due to the way the points system operates and amateur boxing now as a spectacle and entertainment is lets be honest, pretty ****!

I've been to a few internationals in the stadium in the last few years and you're often lucky if there's a couple of hundred there. It's sad but the general public only get interested in amateur boxing for the Olympics and to be fair it's hard to blame them a lot of the time given the lack of excitement in the sport these days.

That's why IMO you have to hand it to Dunne and Peters in what they've done on the professional front. Like the hype or not it's what was needed to get Joe Public watching boxing again and like other posters have mentioned the atmosphere at some of those shows is real hair on the back of the neck stuff compared to the morgue like atmosphere in a cold and dreary stadium during an international.

Is that fair on the amateurs? Of course not but you have to move with the times and IMO amateur boxing hasn't although allowing Egan and Taylor on the point show next month is a step in the right direction.

I do think this years finals should get a good turnout although it's a shame the draw has deprived us of a few more decent matches. Some of the best matchups were in the semi's last weekend.
