I'm going to a black tie event in a few weeks time. Would i get away with wearing some sort of skinny black tie and white shirt along with my dress suit as opposed to a dicky bow?

Is everyone else going to wear bowties? If so then you will look very out of place. If you want to wear a skinny tie then you need a shirt with a collar that is straight. A spread collar needs a wide tie. You should also try to match the width ot the tie to the width of your jacket lapel.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

    Spot on on all respects.
You could probably gauge whether it will be all bow ties on the formality of the occasion. Personally I'd go with the bow tie, but a tie can work just as well.
