Gibson SG

I was in X Music on Sunday having a little play on a Fender Tele and a Pro Junior amp. Nice little combo that, but after a while I decided to check out a few other guitars. I picked up a Gibson SG (€1099 or €1899 can't exactly remember) and was very pleasently surprised. Even with the Pro Junior at 2-3 volume the SG really rocked, very loud and aggressive. I liked it. Anywho as most of you will know this kind of chance exposure to a nice guitar gets the GAS gland inflamed and I need answers.

    1) Was the price more likely the cheaper or dearer price?
    2) Do all SG's sound the same (mahogany bodied)?
    3) Are there models to avoid?

and yes I am thinking Tokai or Bacchus but I may go for a swap on adverts with my Eggle.

i got my Gibson SG special about 6/7 years ago, replaced the pickups with seymor duncans a few years after getting it to increase the gain tone and it is one of the nicest sounding and nicest playing guitars ive played.

    theyre a great guitar.

The Sabbath fan in me has always craved an SG. The guitar player in me just can't stand Gibsons. I did have the pleasure of playing the short lived Tony Iommi sig SG style Eggle in the old Eggle factory in Coventry in the mid-90's.

Now that was an SG to GAS over, they still pop up on ebay from time to time ;)

SG Standards are about €1100 or so new, so Im guessing that's the price you're thinking of, but (and I stress this is all IMO) I haven't played a Gibson I'd pay that amount of money for without feeling someone was having a laugh at my expense.

Yea I did notice that Iommi SG on Ebay a while back. I regularly do an Eggle search. I don't want to pay that much for an SG though. A secondhand tokai USG75 should be in the €400 mark. There are a couple(Gibsons) on Adverts for €600 or thereabouts but unless I got one for cheaper especially in this climate I reckon I could get over it.

I think there's a blonde, possibly all maple, Bacchus SG on ebay, or at least there was a couple of weeks ago.

I'm just waiting for a BFV-58 to come up, then I'm in. The rest of them, I just glance at and try not to look too hard, you know how it is :D

There ia a maple one and a mahogany one. The maple looks real nice but I think I'll go for a mahogany one. I'm looking for a particular sound and I would guess all maple would be different to all mahogany. Besides the maple is touching the 1k mark with shipping and taxes. Glances, then quickly close window. Log off. Log on. Log off again. ;)

I know ya aint the biggest Gibson fan Ste but I would check out the Gibson SG faded series too- thats the cheapest of the bunch. I had one many moons ago- barely there thin satin finish, neck like a tree trunk, sustained for days. The bad stuff: the nut was woeful, the worst cut nut I've ever encountered (replaced it with a bone nut) and the frets could have really done with a final finishing off. It was getting there though. The bone nut made a huge difference, when you played a note you could feel the whole guitar reverberating. I dont know if I'm selling this one too well but do check one out before you take the plunge.

Oh, by the way, that red Bacchus SG has MY name on it!! Just ask Hisashi, he'll tell you himself the lovely young chap from Donegal said he's not allowed to sell it to anyone else....

A true classic rock geetar IMHO.
AFAIK there are thin necked ones and baseball bat ones so pick your poison.
IMHO the ones with the big "batwing" pickguards are way cooler.
I did see that all maple Bacchus SG but a maple SG ... ? It just ain't right ;)

Love SG's in all forms. Have an old LTD viper 400, its just like a metal sg. Thought about selling it a few times to get a prs but i can never part with it.

Still id kill for a GOOD gibson SG. In red with the back scratchplate like punchdrunks. Sexy guitars.

Yeah I know, the end of the trem bar looks like a tampon FFS!:P
I'd prefer to have one with a regular wraparound tailpiece. :)
